I'm not seeing where I seemed to be saying that at all. The other member wasn't someone who 'once' misfilled the tank, it was someone who had owned the car for a while, and I guess was never a true believer that misfilling was a thing, and after some time period of driving that way, there was eventually a little encounter with reality that got dealt with by replacing the filler neck and valves, and going back to the same habits again. The next resulting encounter with reality only came after another eight months of that treatment.

If anything, I'd say it looks like an average person who isn't trying to tempt fate, but only once or twice makes a genuine mistake, probably hasn't much to worry about.

Yeah....about every 480-500 miles.
Somewhere around DTE=20 you'll hear a BEEEEEP! and get a low fuel alert.
After a few more miles (10?) DTE just goes to zero.

After that?
You usually have about 1.8 gallons left in a G3.
I usually make a mental note to get gas sometime at the next convenient stop.

The G4 has an 11.3 gallon tank, and if the Prime is anything like the Pip, they may have shrunk that down some to accommodate the battery, but lawyers will always do what lawyers do, so my thinking is that the G4 also has an onboard "reserve."

Haven't run out of gas yet.
I make it a habit not to have to "guess" how far a tank of fuel will take me, and I have access to several tanks of staged fuel at any given time.

I don't think so. We got re-stationed here in the Spring of 2000 and when the gas lines froze it was a very cold snap in December. It was my old Z-24 Chevy and probably had just under 1/4th of a tank left. It was about 10 below zero and I got in and left for work...didn't get but a few blocks and she just died and wouldn't restart. I got a ride to the gas station to get my gas can filled up and picked up a bottle of Heet. Put in the Heet and the gas and she started on the 2nd attempt...weird.

 

Shouldn't E10 fuel perform a similar function now? While not as effective unit-for-unit as the form of alcohol used in Heet, it still does something similar, and you now get it by the gallon every fill-up, not by the pint just when a special effort is made.

 

In case anyone is wondering, the Prime tank is also 11.3 gallons. That was really dumb what they did to the PiP fuel capacity.

 

I actually DID wonder about that....and I concur.
The Pip has an appallingly small fuel tank, but then it was only intended as a compliance PHEV.

I wish I had a clean, late model used Pip myself, but I'm sure that I would regularly curse the small fuel tank.
I'm glad common sense prevailed with the Prime.
NOW I have NO reason that I can think of not to recommend a Prime over a wireless G4 Prius!

 

11 gallons is huge! I had a 2013 Scion iQ and it had 8.5 gallons but had a strange fuel gauge and would start blinking when you still had over 3 gallons left!! It has a small 1.3l engine and got around 45 mpg but that blinking light was so annoying...I ended up using the Trip mileage to know when it was really near empty...usually 280-300 miles but rarely took over 7 gallons to fill.

 

After having my first car run dry with the needle still above E, then a later car having a quarter of its tank below E, I've been more inclined to characterize each car's fuel gauge to get a better idea of the tank's actual state. And do this early during car ownership, at a convenient no-risk time and circumstance, before encountering a situation where I might really need to know how much fuel is there.

 

Yes there are still miles at 0 miles remaining. While it might not make a huge difference, delaying getting gas keeps demand lower, and to some degree gas prices. Our 9 gallons at full up might not make all that much difference though. They do pump more oil out of the ground everyday. Food for thought.

How so? Does running around with the less weight of a near-empty tank give you a measurable increase in MPG? Or is your fuel station a significant detour off your normal driving routes, requiring extra driving miles to reach it?

The gas industry is keeping track of just total volume of fuel sold, not the number of stops at the fuel stations.

 

I seem to recall that other vehicle makes I owned would revert to “LOW” once the range dropped below 20 miles. Which is probably best.
