2014 prius v eats oil only on road trips

    just replaced my pvc valve, its not that hard to do, just takes some effert since its in a tight space, as you can see mine is clearly coverd in gunk inside and out, gonna do a 1000 mile test drive to see if my oil lose stays the same, ill post back here when i see results. lol kinda funny that hybrids have oil bunning problems when the point of them was to move away from normal cars.

    i changed mine following what this guy does (1) 2010-2015 Toyota Prius PCV valve remove and install - YouTube

    good point, ive already have one since everyone on this fourm says its an good ideal, just have to install it. planning on doing an install why also deep cleaning my EGR and intake manifold. i did see (3) 3rd gen prius head gasket replacement - YouTube did a head gasket replacement in under two hours so im feeling like i could devote a few days into trying this, after i do lots of DD after all i dont want to crap out my engine. ill probably get it done in the next few weeks in i feel like messing with it, since when i start i cant stop since its my daily driver

    intake2.jpg i started the process today and heres what the intake looked like, two right i already wiped cleaned the two lefted is what i found them all looking like, i recommand everyone do this to their prius and install a catch can, i can see why its needed now! intake.jpg this is what i got out from the intake maniford useing brake cleaner and scrubing with a brush, when i took off the throttle there was a little puddle of oil in the intake maniford, the thing is my car is running perfectly so this is something that i can totally see killing the ring or head gaskets.

    i wish i could do the EGR but it started snowing agian so itll have to wait as for the catch can, i had to order the hoses from amazon since no auto store near me has them.

    can.jpg it was a little longer of a job then i thought it would be but now that i got in all hooked up i feel pretty great, im working on getting a mount 3d printed so i have it held somewhat in place with friction. im hoping to do my egr cleaning sometime next week, i did notice a few things other people should do when doing this project, if you wanna save the most money order online, at least thats how it is in denver, i tried to have the tubes go under the gen wires but i then realised i wont be able to get it out without spilling oildown the tubes so i had to go over instead.

    do you guys now of any other projects prius owners tend to do? on a side note i wish i got a prime instead since gas priced seem to keep going up and up lol

    after i clean out my EGR ill take it for an road trip next month and ill report back if all of this fixed my oil burning

    just cleaned my EGR and i gotta say it sucked as much as i thought it would to take it out, but the thing that really sucked was cleaning the dang thing, i ended up having to soak it in oven cleaner all night just to un clog it, the EGR was covered omost blocked out in carbon build up, at least now its all shinny metal on the inside and out.

    after doing all of these tasks i found that my MPG has gone way up!! useally a full tank would get me 390-400 miles, but not im at 450 miles and still at 2 bars. i cant believe it haha! any way thanks guys for your support and knowledge wouldnt have gottin this far with out help.

    btw oil catch can has about a tea spoon of oil in it after 500 miles, im so glad its not going into my engine!

    Next time try a pressure washer for the egr cooler cleanse;).

    You would have been done in 30 minutes:).

    Toyota’s less-than-stellar design at 150k. :mad: It’d be ok if they at least acknowledged this thing needs regular cleaning, but hey, loss-of-face...:rolleyes:

    So if I'm reading right, that's a picture of (1) a foil pan, containing (2) a bunch of brake cleaner, mixed with (3) whatever amount of oil was in fact in the manifold?

    changing transmission oil and "hard break in" have nothing to do with each other.

    the old "break in" myths were from 50+ years ago when parts were married to each other, like cam shafts/ followers.

    today, everything in your car is much higher precision/tolerance, and was "broken in"long long long ago (as in, never).

    your oil consumption "problem" is just normal sustained high rpm operation. any engine that runs 9/10 if it's RPM range is going to consume more oil than at idle. if you're not checking your oil at every fuel stop, then you don't have a reference point as to whether the high rpm use actually burned those amounts of oil.... or just the last quarter quart during the high rpm use, because it was already low.

    IIIRC 2014 Model year Prius v still had the lower tension piston rings, and maybe a piston with oil drain passages not as effective. In other words, while any engine can start consuming oil, these are more likely, and sooner/faster.

    i would say about two tea spoons of oil, lots of carbo/dried oil build up and one can of break cleaner, i didnt notice any improvements to the MPG after i did this job, but i did see major improvements to mpg when i install an oil catch can, my guess is the extra oil being sent into the intake from the crankcase made the engine work alot dirtier/harder.

    this isnt an hard job to do, if you worked on your own cars for a while bc screw paying shop prices when i can just buy the replacement part die 1/50th the price they charge for labor. i did over touque a few screws and snap them in half why inside the throttle body, luckly i had an extractor drill bit and ache hardware not to far from where i live, i would recommend only hand tighting most od these bolts.

    im looking to get my prius to last at leat 600k, gonna baby it a little even if that means i take it apart for cleaning once a year. my first car was a 95 camry with 400k miles that i turned into 550k untill it was totaled in an accident (tea boned at a stop light) man i miss that car lol ran great like most cars made in jap, made sure to buy my current prius that was made in japan

    I had oil burning problem too at 85k, looked for a lot of solutions until I came up to this post. I did the repair and it cost me about $40, which included the tools. The PCV only cost about $10. No more burning oil. Problem is solved for me.

    Thanks for confirming it's a potential solution! (I suspect there are other causes for oil loss/burning).

    hay dude look into installing an oil catch can, itll stop all oil burning problems from that point on. theres step by step guide here how to install one
