Green Bean Longevity?

There’s many mentions of charge level as a measure of battery health. Not sure how relevant that is: if you’re driving a very level, lowish speed route, the programming will keep the car in electric-only more than usual, run the battery down. Reliably.

More telling is a battery that’s low more than usual, and/or charge that rises and falls erratically.

 

Only time will tell. Too many of these used batteries only last a year or so. Last year, I paid $2145 for a genuine Toyota installed battery, with their nationwide 3 year warranty. It will certainly last another WORRY FREE, 15 years in our 2005. Cheaper isn't always better.

It seems that Toyota charges more for Gen 3 than gen 2 batteries even though the modules are the same. The harness/electronics are somewhat different. That makes it more attractive to buy a "reconditioned one or a kit from newpriusbatteries or projectlithium.

 

My dealer quoted me $3,800 installed. I won't go there if/when my battery fails.

 

Maybe on some models but not on a C. Guess it is not really a "Gen 2" though.
The C doesn't seem to HAVE an "electric only mode".......except when coasting down a hill or going less than 5 MPH with your foot OFF the gas.

 

There is no guessing. A Prius c is not a Gen 2.

On a Gen 2, if there is enough storage in the HV battery, it will propel the car along using only the electric motors when under 64 km/h (40 MPH). This is what we know to be electric-only mode. You have to be in stage 4 for it to work reliably, hence getting better FE in stage 4.

We're almost a year out. About 2 or 3 months after the first install, the battery crapped out. Called up Greenbean, texted them the battery failure code, and they came out and swapped it again a few days later at absolutely no cost. It's been fine ever since. So I'm about 10 months on this 2nd battery. I don't regret it at all. They didn't try to weasel out of the warranty claim.

 

Hey, how has the battery been since writing this?

Also would like to know more about your experience since writing this. My grandfather is looking to replace the battery in 04' prius that I'm using. I live out of state from him, and hate to see him fall for a scam. Especially for a vehicle I am driving.

Where did you end up having your vehicle serviced? How was the experience and cost if you remember? I'm also located in Baton Rouge, 04' prius.
