After fighting fuel gauge problems. Only takes 3 gallons when “empty”, dealer says we need a new tank on our 2008 with 90K miles. Over 3 grand! Anyone tried the aftermarket tanks? Spectrum? Love the car and it still like new otherwise. But that may be a trade in trigger at 3K. Any experience appreciated.
Welcome to PriusChat!! Doubtful if a new tank even costs 1k at the dealer parts counters, sounds like you've found a "stealership". Best to call around and check with other dealers for pricing and labor on such a job. Any decent mechanic should be able to install a tank in an hour or two, and used tanks are plentiful and quite affordable as well : http://car-part.com/ Not sure which part of N. FL you're near, but https://autobeyours.com/ has/had a location in that area. Bet Steve could help you, at 621 S. Get a second opinion on cost. There are many independent hybrid repair shops these days. Just do a Google search for your zip code and call around.
On the '04, the car will cheerfully run out of gas without warning me, not even flashing the last dot, then the '08 begs and screams for fuel after using 8 gallons. I ignore them both and set the trip meter every time I put gas in, despite the gauge issues, the MPG computer is pretty good. Add a zero, that's time to fill. Much cheaper regardless of where you buy the fuel tank. If your computer is screwed up by the problem, just fill it every 300-350 miles to be safe maybe.
