after about 10 years , the chemistry of nickel metal hydride seems to break down and diminish ... and if they dont keep constant minimal (allowed to drain down way belowe nominal level) charge they can 'reverse polarity' -- some kindy crystalization of the molecules ... howz that for constant maintance need ? ...

It's actually just what he does, he spends a lot of time nitpicking and starting arguments over anything. There's a reason why he's on most people's ignore lists. Which is pretty crazy when you consider that it's a Prius forum :ROFLMAO:

yes , quiete operation, engine off when stopped after warmup .. oh yeah peaceful people driving this things and on forums discussing them ...

freakin dude on crack going around stirring the pot ,, accusing me of saying things i didnt ... we did have a great discussion going about vaccinations .. it got so busy the op put a stop to it because he couldnt keep up ...

maybe he just got some marching orders from someone else ... like a troll of sorts , maybe an 'infiltrator' .. coming to sew discord .. and uproot MPG savers worldwide !! he maybe a plant from big oil !!!!

I did no such thing. EVER.
Disagreeing with something you said is NOT accusing you of anything.

When you say " I did XX and the outcome was fine." that carries an implied recommendation that others probably could get similar results.
In some cases, that is not a responsible thing to do.

    This is a public forum.
You should expect to catch some crap occasionally if you make a "mis-statement".
I don't get all upset when someone catches me making a mistake.

There is no implied recommendation and it's not a loaded statement !!
This is what an implied recommendation looks like :

" I performed this action to the engine , and i think it is good and it could be good for others too .. "

    - I do agree, others could probably get similar results, esp. helpful in a cold climate ( oh , another implied recommendation ?) ...
why dont u stop being such a nit picking nanny b((*& ?

it's not unsafe ,, it's not going to blow any gaskets or seals ...the miniscule effect it has is way below the design heat paremeters from toyota engineering ... the prius engine stays pretty cool .. why .. + ? it turns off when at rest most of the time !!! it simply doesn't get hot like an idling engine in an intersection would on a normal , non-hybrid car ..

really , this is really taking time to be a ninny .. a nanny .. and other words that rhyme ...
I guess i should put you on ignore because , like a flat eather, you will go on forever with your tiraide ..

what if i told you i sold the car, and wont be posting further problems .. would u then stop with your crititicisms and attacks ?

    no, you wont .. --

The "example" you gave is a specific recommendation not an implication.

You apparently don't understand what "implied" means.
That is a criticism......but not an "attack".

Yes it's normal for people on the internet to give crap to other people. It becomes an issue when it's the same person. Every. SINGLE. time.

I've done the OCC, EGR circuit cleaning, and fluid changes, but playing with the battery with my lack of electrical expertise scares the socks off me. I need to find a local mentor to look over my shoulder a little so I don't shock myself...

You should find something else to occupy your time and money.
Because there is little to NO scientific proof that any of the "maintenance procedures" for the HV battery will actually gain you anything useful.
There is some anecdotal evidence that if you start early and do it regularly, keeping the cells balanced can gain you something.
But probably not enough to justify the time and cost.

You can NOT prevent a battery from wearing out eventually.
And once bad, you can NOT bring it back to useful life.

    Very true .. however ....

If you live in a rainy/wet/humid / salty environment .. ALL bateries have some corrosion on the terminals overtime building up ...

more than a 'balance' aspect is the corrosional issue .. the terminal blocks and ESP. the voltage sense cable , are highly prone to corrosion esp in the wet environments / leaking hatchback lid seal ... ...so just cleaning without even balancing buys you alot .. balance would be a bonus but when the corrosion starts and the Vdelta between modules increases with more corrosion , then the out-of-balance factor increases ...

in the HV battery area (AFTER fuse is removed) ... make sure the big fuse is disconnected on the side ... then the HV battery is isolated from the car... so then u have a battery with 200v (7.2*28) ... on the battery back is a center terminal , discon this and then the battery voltage is half? ... as u disconnect the terminal blocks the voltage goes down and gets more and more safe ... (as you get to more and more individual and disconnected modules) .. just use rubber gloves if you are concerned, avoid skin contact & remember it's dc not AC so its not as 'violent' .. and dont do it in a wet condition
.. ... so when the car gets to be about 10 yrs old .,.. corrosion (prob anywhere you live except like desert areas like arizona, nevada, southern cali, etc) ... sets in and this cleaning of the bus bars, the voltage sense tabs (BAT front) and an inspection of the pins of the voltage sense and battery computer are a
good preventive maintanence to further avoid the red triangle.

Concur that batteries have a lifespan. My batteries only have 65k miles on them and the car has been in humid areas its whole life so some corrosion is probably there. I'm not willing to spend a lot of money on an old battery. Now doing *some* preventative maintenance and learning from the experience is something I usually enjoy.

It won't hurt to clean all the connections. It may or may not have corrosion.
Only by taking the cover off will you know. Watch several videos of different people doing the work.
It's not HARD work, it just takes time. But time well spent.
Time is money. How much is your time worth? If you have time to do the work yourself, it's money you don't
have to give to someone else.

The prolong system is designed to charge and discharge the battery and balance it out. Which should give it
a better and longer life and improve its performance and the cars. It's about $700. New cells are about $1600.
Is it worth it to spend the extra money, and save time replacing the old cells with new ones? You do it once and
forget about them for 5-10 years. Eventually, the old pack will need to be replaced. And no one knows for CERTAIN
how long any battery will last and how much the prolong set up will help the older battery.

These are things you need to think about and find a balance to what your short and long term goals are and how and
where you want to spend your money, and time.

That overlooks that fact that the "rated" life of most batteries in applications like this is listed in "charge/discharge cycles".
If you get carried away and do it too often, it might actually REDUCE the total life span.

I understand every battery had a charge/discharge life. Too many full charge and fully discharges will
    likely decrease the battery life.
I received my Prolong charger/discharger today. I'm a little disapointed that you have to switch the two.
I guess I missunderstood how it worked. I figured you connected BOTH and turned it on and walked away....
This is almost too much like work!

I was going to test the hybrid battery before installing the system and running it, but I can't find in Techstream
where or how to test it.:confused:

Did you say you put new motor in, and got bad mpg off the bat? Or was it used, reman? They might have put junk spark plugs in it? Or were they the ones from old engine.
