I'm posting this in part to ensure everyone else in the UK is aware of this, and partly out of curiosity if this is offered elsewhere in the world. I bought my Prius Gen 4 new in 2016 on release. Mine is the highest specification Excel trim. At the time of purchase it came with a free 5 year warranty, which was standard for Toyota in the UK at the time. However, getting it serviced this week as it reaches 5 years old, I asked about extending the warranty. I was told this was now automatic, through Toyota Relax (Toyota Relax | Toyota Warranty | Toyota UK). This automatically extends the warranty up to 10 years, for free. You have to get the car serviced at Toyota (but I'd do that anyway, to be honest). This seems like an excellent deal to me. Is this comparable elsewhere?
How much do your services cost, say an oil change and tire rotation? Is there a "miles" element to the warranty?
Yes, it is 10 years / 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. You'd have to pay to extend beyond that. I extended my service plan with my last service for a a further 3 services over 30,000 miles/3 years (whichever comes first). This covers all scheduled maintenance. It costs £20 a month (approx 27.50 USD, 34.50 CAD) Should add that the monthly cost also includes 3 MOT Tests. These are legally mandated safety checks that must be passed by all vehicles to drive on UK roads. These cost £55 each.
Currently even less than that, according to Google: I've noticed Toyota UK seems to play their maintenance schedule cards close to their chest (there's no readily-viewable maintenance schedule, at least last time I looked). FWIW, Toyota Canada similarly stopped publishing their maintenance schedule, maybe with the advent of 4th gen (2016 model year). The do disclose it, on Toyota Canada website, in an event-by-event maintenance calendar, but it's labourious. By design I think... Anyway, currently your (UK) plan would convert to $355~ CDN yearly. That's not onerous, at first blush, if you want to just relax and let Toyota dealerships handle everything. I think the crunch comes one something does go out, how responsive/diligent/thorough are they? Possibly extra-to-regular-service items (of interest to me at least) are periodic: 1. Thorough/complete cleaning of the Exhaust Gas Recirculation circuit, and intake manifold. (North American Toyota is in near-complete denial on this, and dealerships will NOT stoop to clean, only expensive replacement). 2. Transaxle fluid change. (neither CDN or US Toyota acknowledge any need for this). 3. Brake fluid change. (Toyota Canada says tri-yearly or 48K kms, while Toyota USA says nothing). Any idea how Toyota UK is with those? Suspect it would incur extra cost, and be dear. In particular #1.
AUSTRALIA - all TOYOTAs 5yr, Unlimited kilometres. ALSO - 7yrs Unlimited for the DRIVETRAIN/Engine as long as serviced by the book - not necessarily by the dealer. AND - Hybrid battery 10 years/Unlimited provided it has a check at the dealer at some stage (might be 7 yrs??)
Not sure about the cars' general warranty, but I do know that in Portugal, in order to maintain the 10-year battery warranty you need to undergo a yearly battery test (free with routine service, or €55 if separate) after the 5-year mark.
