I have been driving a Prius for about 11 years, and I consider myself a hyper-miler. But it is hard to have that MPG focus all of the time, so sometimes my MPGs are just good and not great. My calculated MPG for my current Prius is 61.3 for it's first 36,621 miles. Today I had to make about a 50 mile round trip to a specialty store and had no reason to "hurry". So no freeway driving, even though that would have been faster. No AC was required as the temperature was in the low to mid 70's and there was almost no elevation change to speak of on the route. The 51.2 mile round trip took about three hours and was mostly through light or moderate traffic. I had just recently checked the air in my tires and they are "as usual" with 42 PSI all around. So - 51.2 miles with an 82.6 displayed MPG. My "overstatement" is very consistent at 5%. So I figure that I really got about 78.5 MPG.
How do you find the tyre wear at 42PSI? I think the recommended pressure is 36PSI (or something slightly lower) here on the 17" wheels. I've often pondered increasing the pressure, but I did that in a previous car and the centre are of the tyre treads wore out super quick, more than negating any fuel savings.
I have always used high air pressure and theoretically the tires should wear in the center of the tread. But on my 2008 Prius I was still on my second set of tires at 120,000 miles (changed out originals at 65,000) and my 2016 shows no middle tread issues 36,000 miles into their wear. I used to work in the retail tire business and the percentage of tire issues caused by over-filling was very small. I think the only real issue would be filling above the sidewall maximum.
Radials don't seem to be as susceptible to wear in the middle like the old CrossPlies (or worse, the Bias Ply tyres) if subjected to some higher pressures. I've always added 15-20% (numerically) to the recommended pressure - but don't on PRIUS as they're high-ish anyway.
Wow, nice. The best I ever got was 87.0 mpg but that was over a shorter 24.3 mile commute. The highest I ever got over a long day was 67.9 mpg over 121 miles. Not a hyper-miler per se, but my lifetime average over 39000 miles is close to yours at 61 or 62. All numbers were from the Prius display and not calculated. Too old and too lazy to do this math stuff. While this mpg has been great, I'm longing to get out of the Prius into a Rav4 Hybrid. There will be a serious hit in terms of MPG, but my 6'2" frame would be very happy.
First long trip in 2021 XLE - 1800 miles, 61.6 mpg on the MID. Included highway speeds 70-75 mph, and fair amount of driving in the mountains using B-mode. Got 65.0 mpg outbound in the flat area with a bit of tailwind. Don't know how accurate the MID report is, though
