AFAIK, 2021 PP is no longer shipping. At least that seems to be the case in our local dealers. They have run down dry, only a few in stock left for my out-of-state dealers. I have not checked greater Boston area dealers who usually have more stock inventory than any other place, but it may be hard to find any dealers willing to go the extra mile to deal with an out-of-state buyer in this seller's market. Have you tried Car Guru? It is showing a few inventories in OR, 3 dealers less than 150 miles from the location in your profile.

I am having the same problem in the Washington DC area. Maryland dealers have some kind of $4500 mfg incentive not available in Virginia. The only ones listed on their websites seem to be fictional when I call them.

 

my local dealer, wellesley toyota, had 47 prime in stock fairly recently. now, they are down to 8.

must be the chip problem. they aren't even advertising new cars anymore. when i googled them, only preowned hits came up.

 

If I were you, I would wait. You have plenty of time to wait for the 2022 models to come in. And by then you may even have a better choice than Prius Prime. I can't say for sure, but if the chip situation gets better and Toyota starts to build more PP's, by next spring, they should offer great incentives again in regions where they are offering it now, such as NE, NY/NJ, CA. If then you want to travel to those areas, it should be fairly quick and easy to close a deal. I don't see any point in waiting 6 months to order a car and pay an MSRP or more for it. I just bought the last 2021 PP our local Toyota dealer had in their inventory. They did not give me a large discount on it, but with rebate and incentives, the net price will be $12K below MSRP after the tax return next year.

 

Wait, wait, wait.
The holding cost for a car over 9 months is going to be insurance + depreciation, at a minimum. Plus you'd get wigged out about maintaining battery health (traction and 12v), tire flat spots, etc, etc.
People don't love the Prius - they'll be great deals on them again, most likely. Could even be increased Federal/State/Local rebates/incentives - never know...

In case I am not the only one beating the bushes for a Prius Prime LE, here's today's status:

After much online looking, phone calls, emails, and texting, with many Toyota dealers, I was offered a new 2021 PP LE for MSRP from a dealer in Virginia. They had no flexibility in the price, so, knowing that a few miles away in Maryland there is a Toyota $4500 incentive still valid, I said no thanks.

This afternoon a guy from Heritage Toyota outside Baltimore phoned to say they are expecting "about 20" PP LEs "fairly soon," and do I want to put down a $1000 deposit on one. They agreed that if the incentive is expired or it takes too long, or whatever, I will be refunded. I said yes, and blue is preferred. Still waiting to be told how to pay the deposit.

I bought an XLE about two months ago at Heritage. At that time, they had perhaps a dozen Primes of various trims and colors.

At that time, they didn't seem to know much about the Prime. In fact, my sales guy said mine was the first he had sold. I think he said he had worked there 2-3 months. Maybe they've got PP religion?

They were pretty straight shooters. Didn't try any monkey business with me traveling from out of state. Business Manager did the typical hard sell on extended warranty and protection packages, etc. Unfortunately, I still haven't received my real plates, and my temp tag is about to expire, but this could be an issue with the IL DMV as much as the dealers.

I must say that the story of getting a delivery of 2021s at this point sounds fishy, but who knows. Maybe they are scooping up the leftovers from dealerships that haven't been able to move them.

 

There may be a shortage of Primes, but there is no shortage of BS from the dealer. I bought my '17 from Toyota of Renton, the location of the OP. A couple of days ago I got an email from them asking me to "Upgrade" to a 2021 Prime. No price listed, but a monthly payment of four hundred and something was offered. Since I only have 20K miles on mine, I have no reason to "upgrade". So I decided to check their website as the OP says they aren't available. He is right, they only list three new Prius on their website and they are 2022 models, but not Primes. So I have no idea what they were trying to sell me.

 

Maybe they were trying to sell you a bill of goods!

 

they want to steal as many pre owned cars as they can because 1) they don't have much inventory, and 2) they can sell them for a lot more than many people realize they are worth.

they'll try to sell you anything once you get there. it's all about getting in your face

 

We are from Maine and we just bought a 2021 Prius Prime Limited from a dealer in MA. Blue Magnetism. They kinda had us over a barrel because we didn’t want ANY other vehicle and they were the only place that had it.

It’s been a week now, paperwork is finally signed. Now they just deliver it up here, escort us to the town office to do our registration, take a copy of the registration back with them and take our trade back with them. It’s an insane process for dealing with a car purchase from Massachusetts. If we didn’t absolutely want this vehicle, and it wasn’t one of only three available within 1000 miles, we probably wouldn’t have gone through all the hassle. But we’re down to the homestretch and I think we will be able to make it through this.

Then we ended up paying $866+ in extra fees to the dealer just for us being an out of state customer.

Credit to the dealer, they could’ve just said no to an out-of-state sale. So we are thankful they didn’t. We searched nationwide and I was willing to fly anywhere, have our trade driven to them on a flatbed, whatever it took.

I sure do hope the market availability improves. The dealer sales person did tell me, privately, that part of the reason they were willing to do the deal with us is because we had a 2020 trade in with less than 10,000 miles. We just weren’t happy with our GM product and we wanted out. They need trades to resell.

After a week of no communication I got tired of waiting. Took the train to Connecticut and drove home a Blue Magnetism PP LE for out-the-door price of $26,889.19. I highly recommend Toyota of Stamford.
