4 quarts on 3.9 quarts engine oil Toyota Prius C 2012

    Today i changed the engine oil of my 2012 Toyota Prius C, i bought 4 quarts of oil and used the 4 quarts on the engine, SAE 0W - 20. My question is, the engine capacity is 3.9 quarts, can that 0.1 extra quart cause any damage? i already turned the car on for a few minutes and the engine sounds normal, nothing suspicious. Does any of you have any experiences by putting 4 quarts of oil on a 3.9 quart engine?

    I tried to measure it but the oil is so clean i could barely see it on the dipstick, i think it's almost touching the second dot on the dipstick.

    Also AutoZone gave me the engine oil filter YZZF2 the last one i changed it, now they gave me the YZZE1 which is a little bit smaller, is there any negative effects on using this one instead of the bigger one?

    They gave you a smaller oil filter? This is a canister type correct, not spin on? Ugh. The dealer is probably cheaper than AutoZone on OE filters, and more likely to give you the correct one, whichever it might be...

    0.1qt overfill is not significant to anything other than your wallet: you no longer have 0.1qt on the shelf for next time. It won't hurt the car one bit.

    The filter is a deeper mystery- I bought a few for our c but they were all the same size, very little differentiation from brand to brand.

    I think the previous filter they gave me was for the gen 2 Prius since it was a little bit larger, the current one is smaller but the difference is not really noticeable until you really look into it, also changed from 90915 YZZF2 [bigger one] to 90915 YZZE1 [smaller one].

    Good to know that it won't hurt my vehicle engine, i did not like to leave 0.1 quarts go to waste every time i changed the engine oil.

    Assuming "second dot" is the upper dot, that's perfect.

    I've recently done the spin-on filter conversion (on my 2010 Prius), and I figured I could help you based on my receipts from dealership parts department. However the couple of invoices I have (post-conversion) have diff part no's lol. AFAIK, the shorter one is correct, the longer one's for RAV4, Camry and so on.

    Anyway, real easy way to check: phone a Toyota dealership parts department, tell them your car, and ask what the oil filter is. Just for giggles phone a second dealership, repeat the process. AFAIK there's only two spin-on types.

    FWIW, the first time they gave me YZZF2 (and told me the longer version ends in "1", and would also fit). Then the second time, invoice says YZZN1? The first guy seemed to know his stuff, but who knows.

    It seems like Toyota uses the shorter oil filter on the Prius C, but i don't think using the larger one could damage the engine, it might even filter the oil for longer, maybe. And yes, with second dot i mean the upper one. Thank you very much.

    One thing, at least on our 2010 Prius, just beyond the oil filter the crankcase bulges out further. I believe the longer filter would fit fine, but it might be a bit more difficult getting a oil filter socket on. In your case you've been there done that, so... Basically it gives you a little more filter area.

    Well in the Prius C engine the oil filter faces straight down, so it's still easy to access and remove it even if it's shorter, it looks similar to this one, this is from a gen 2 Prius but the Prius C looks almost the same

    Looks like the larger filter can hold that extra 0.1 qt. of oil. ;)

    I was wondering that, but i already had the filter installed and was pouring the oil in, i guess i will find out next time.
