Does anybody know what that apparatus is that's attached to the positive terminal on the Prime 12v battery? Pic attached.
The red thing is a cover/insulator the black thing looks like a fusible link. Both are safety devices.
Yes......the black thing that's under the red cover is what I was referring to - looks like a splitter of some kind. And I thought I noticed fuses in it, but I wasn't sure - thanks for the confirmation. I'm not sure if it would be advisable or even possible to use a battery tender on this battery.
I use one regularly. The red cover opens by squeezing the two molded arrows. The negative pole is totally exposed.
The "junior" is a very low capacity unit that really is intended to be used for motorcycles and lawn mowers. It probably will be fine for your car........as long as the battery is fresh and healthy. But then you don't need one at all if it is driven regularly. It will NOT be at all useful to recharge a battery that is mostly DEAD.......probably.
I typically attach whatever accessory wiring I'm adding to the protected side of that fuse. It's generally a bolted connection and as easy to get to as the clamp itself, so it will take a common ring terminal and make a very convenient and protected attachment point.
I own both the Deltran BatteryTender Jr. and the Plus. Agreed......you need a healthy battery (that you'd like to keep healthy) to use the Jr. on a car battery but I prefer it to the Plus. It takes about 4 hours to flip from red to green and provides a gentle float charge that I trust. I only got 4 years out of my 2015 Prius 12v with no maintenance charging. Deltran advertises a 50% increase with maintenance - so that should be 6 years. We'll see.
