Neighbor's Prius catalytic converter stolen tonight

The c is basically a Gen 3 Prius with a few differences, The cat and exhaust pre-heater functions basically the same.

The technique for stealing a c cat would be the same as a regular Gen 3 or even a v. It appears closer to the configuration on a v.

I have uploaded a photo of the cat-preheater and exhaust for a c.

 

This would be no-billed by a Harris County grand jury.

Criminal defense and parole attorney here from Texas. Texas is one of those places where some prisons have no a/c. It's bad, but it's not that bad. As long as they have water and salt, prisoners can manage. It may take a couple of months to acclimate, but they do. The human body was designed to do this. I'm actually training my daughter to be able to withstand high heat in high humidity. It's not easy, but I don't want her to expect life to be cushy, even if she will have the resources for a cushy life.

It's pretty hard to motivate the voting public to put more money into the prison system.

 

That varies among voting jurisdictions, and how tired they get of the courts extracting big settlements for wrongful deaths and other subhuman treatment.

Maybe there are also relevant differences between former slave states vs non-slave states. Sometimes it seems that that War never ended.

 

Sorry if this has already been covered, but is the Prius victimized at the same rate as other cars? Or is the Prius specifically sought out in this type of burglary?

 

As I understand, Prius cat contains more valuable materials than most others and is specifically sought out by thieves.

Since Prius models are called out, I'd say there's a higher percentage.

 

Police figures in my region show Prii as the top target, but plenty of other vehicles are hit too.

 

This is crazy! Why should we have to weld steel plates under our cars, set up booby traps, or camp in our cars to protect the exhaust pipe? Who would have imagined this a few years ago? What is our world coming to?

 

whenever the economy takes a dump, price of “precious metals” always go up; gold, silver and etc. And that also means cat converter theft goes up, so yes I saw it coming. But netflix is too important to stray away from to observe this correlation. More popcorn please.

And some who think they are entitled to take other people belongings...

Aren't there newer models that are supposed to offer better protection? Do you have this or anyone here have it?

 

These so called "enhancements" are only a marketing tool to pull in and to increase the consumer's confidence, not effectively to deter the thief.

Every shield can be readily removed by grinding off the heads of any fastener holding in place shield with any widely available battery powered angle grinder.

Having an installed shield might effectively sway the prospective thief to go elsewhere.

 

I kind of agree. Maybe the better option is to get good low deductible comprehensive insurance...and let the insurance company pay for it if the cat get s stolen?

On the other hand...I do like the idea of a deterrent. Rather surprised insurance companies are not offering to pay for install of these shields.

 

Yeah I think so. Because if enough people armor-up with good, low-deductable comprehensive, THEN the police will get in gear, goaded by the insurance companies.

Vaguely analogous:

Years back, in Coquitlam, the full-serve-gas-only bastion of BC, we were walking along a street, and looking across to a (full-serve) gas station, the attendant had locked the pump nozzle "on", on somebody's car. Problem was: the auto-shut-off was NOT working, the tank was full, and gas was just a'gushing...

My first thought was "well that can't go unnoticed for long, let's just carry on our walk".

Maybe 5 minutes later (or more...), walking back: "yup, it's still pouring gas". I was contemplating getting in gear (and maybe making the 6 o'clock news...), when an attendant FINALLY stepped out of the booth, did a very comical double-take, and started running towards the environmental disaster.

TLDR: crap CAN drag on.

 

The hundred dollars or so for the cat shield is much cheaper than the $500 deductible I'd have to pay. if my cat is stolen.

The hassle of having it stolen, making a police report, filing an insurance claim and having a shop replace the cat would effective cost more than the $150, if that much.

Either way, I'm covered.

 

My comprehensive deductible is $300 CDN; lower deductibles are available too. At that level, coupled with $500 collision and min allowable third party liability, it’s costing us about $1200 CDN yearly.
