I recently got a 2017 Prius V with 21000 miles. It came with 16" wheels. I'd like to swap them out for something I like better, maybe even 17s. However, I'm confused as to all the numbers related to a swap. I'm not a moron, but the forums, and FB groups have info that is often conflicting. Is there any place with definitive info on sizes, etc, that will work and NOT give erroneous speed readings. The V was available in 16" and 17" wheels. I assume correct tire choice is necessary for a correct speedo reading? At any rate, all I'm certain of is that the bolt pattern is 114.3mm. I don't know acceptable: Offset Wheel width Tire size for 17" Any help on this, and info (from experience) on wheels from other models that fit would be appreciated.
You want to stay close to the stock outside diameter (OD). Going significantly smaller or bigger will have ramifications. for: handling*, ground clearance, wheel well clearance, "gearing", and last but not least, the odometer will be off. Speedometer intentionally displays slightly high, and it'll be affected as well, but I wouldn't sweat that. Yeah your safest bet is to stay with an alternate stock size. The stock 16" and 17" tire sizes will be listed in the Owner's Manual btw. * Say for example you put on a tire with significantly greater OD. You've effectively "lifted" the vehicle, and that will change things, effect cornering stability, more-n-likely adversely.
