Charger Cable and 220V?

what brand is it?

 

You say the standard EV charger cable can’t handle 240 volts. But i see YouTube videos on how to do it.

Also I see Toyota sells a 240 V EV charging cable in the United Kingdom! Is it the same part with a different plug?

 

This thread is old from 2017 when the PP first came out. At that time, we did not know if the Toyota OEM L1 EVSE for the US models were able to be used on 220v outlet. Since then, ample discussion and DIY conversion examples have proven that the Toyota OEM L1 EVSE can be plugged into a 220v outlet with an adaptor and charge the traction battery at 220v at 12A max. It is still a slightly lower amp than the genuine L2 EVSE operating at max 16A. You do need a properly made adaptor for this to work. They are not sold in store. You should read the thread linked below to learn more about the rig. The OP of the thread has not been onboard for a while. You will need to make your own. Just remember that use of the OEM charging cable on anything other than a regular 120v outlet should be done at your own risk and if anything goes wrong, you are not likely to be covered by the Toyota's warranty.

Have you considered righting the wrong done to the person you sold the car to and giving them the cable that comes with the car at no extra charge?

 

Hey folks...my first post here. My wife has a 2017 Prius 2 and we love it so much she just told me I can trade in my old beater for another Hybrid. Been researching for about a month and looks like I'll be picking up my 2021 Prius Prime XLE (Blue Magnetism) on Saturday.

I know it comes with a 110 charger but in the specs it does say it charges in a few hours with a 220. But I searched on my Toyota parts store and they only list the 110 charger. What's the deal? Toyota doesn't even have the cable? My neighbor is a master electrician so it would be super easy to install a 220 for it. (I already installed a 110 directly across from the port on the car, which is convenient!)

 

Well I should've done more research before asking....found this great video on YouTube and he even mentioned Prius Chat! So this looks very doable and I don't have to mess with the cable that comes with the Prime.

 

We love our ChargePoint Home Flex CPH-50 with NEMA 14-50 plug. You can permanently mount it in your house our bring it with you when you travel. Sockets for that plug are commonly available in campgrounds for mobile homes and camper trailers. The local power company gave us a $500 credit when we bought it. This device enables recharging the Prius at the highest speed possible and this device can be used for any other electric vehicle (Tesla also but with an adapter).

Put the charger for my 2023 Prime on a 220 Circuit (20 amp)
Things didn't go well for me, it stopped charging and tripped a breaker about the third time I used it. Funny burnt smell also. Thankfully it's still working on 110V. Buying a used Juice box for the 220 next week.

 

This is what I have. We have two Tesla Wall Chargers because we and our daughter each have a Tesla (although she moved out but uses the charger when visiting). They both share the same breaker and the charger will negotiate between them the charge to give to their vehicle so the breaker isn't tripped.

On their right is the 3D printer holder I printed using PETG to hold the NACS to J1772 adapter used for charging the Prime. That cable is mostly always attached to that adapter, unless our daughter visits.

 

I wonder if the extra amps the 2023 Prime charger draws on 220/240 was too much for the 12 amp rated oe supplied evse? 15.9 amps on 220 for each hot wire.
I was looking at Ford level 2 evse’s on ebay, I maybe should have gone with one of those for home. Pretty nice they come with standard wall plug and dryer plug capability. And they aren’t made in China. One seller had new ones in the sealed box for $277 plus tax.

 

To avoid confusion I labeled the charging door....

Check out the link. It works for those that have tried it. I have not read one post saying that using the 240v to 120v 'adapter' has caused them any Toyota device problems.

 

Then you missed my post, now charging with a charger DESIGNED for 220 AND a kilowatt monitor so I know how much juice I'm using.

You spent 45,000 for a car and can't spend a few hundred for the correct electrical components to charge it safely?

 

I see your post comments now. Something got HOT (Burnt small) and the 20A breaker tripped. Too bad we do not have more info. Was rge 20A 240v receptacle hot ? Was the 240 t0 120 adapter getting hot. Did the burnt small come from the prius ?

I think it was the factory wall charger that smelled, by the time I was back to the garage everything was cold. The circuit and cord I used has and still does run 2HP electric motors it is fine to handle a load.
The factory charger still works fine. But I now use the Vevor 16 amp 220V wall charger on a dedicated 20 amp circuit (10-2 wire) plus a Kilowatt hour meter to keep track of electricity used. Just FMI.

 

Any info on the 'Kilowatt hour meter' you are using ?
