Won't Lock from Door Handle, Long Beep, All Door Check Out

With one door open, work the door plunger/sensor by hand as you try to lock the doors. Do this sequentially around, and for the hatch, too.

It could be the rear hatch area? Sometimes the carpet cover, can move just enough, that the hatch can close but it can still "jam up," the SKS.

 

Perhaps your second fob is in the car

 

This "feature" can be very annoying sometimes.

My wife and I like to go for walks at a nearby "Rail Trail". She keeps her keys in her purse. She wants to lock her purse in the car, rather than carry it. Her keychain has way too many extra things on it that are not keys, so they won't fit in one of my pockets. Like I said, this can be an annoying "feature" sometimes.

I wonder if putting her keys in an anti-static bag would allow us to intentionally lock her purse + keys in the car. Anti-Static bags work for an E-ZPass toll transponder. I would have her put the anti-static bag with her keys inside her purse, to reduce the possibility of her from forgetting them in the car. Something tells me this plan could backfire somehow.

This whole situation is made worse now that we have two Prius V's in our family of cars. Couldn't they have made the Fobs thinner? I briefly considered pairing both cars to the same fob (is that even possible?). One problem with that is what happens if the fob battery dies. I would only have the emergency key for one of the cars.

 

You can still enter and start the car because the "dead" fob still has a passive rf transponder. Pages 477 and 478.

 

I wasn't quite clear in what I meant. I know about that part about the dead fob, holding it over the start button, and starting the car.

The problem I was referring to was that the fob can only store one mechanical key. If you have the second car, the mechanical key won't unlock the door. I suppose one fob + a separate mechanical key for the second car would solve that problem, and still take up less room than two fobs. Oh while we are in fantasy land, why not re-key the mechanical locks of the second car to match the first I spent my younger years living next to a farm. They had so many vehicles and drivers, they just left the keys in the car all the time (and never locked the doors).

There is another issue I thought of. Imagine the two cars in the same driveway. One person leaves, and presses "unlock" on the fob. It is possible that both cars will unlock. When one car drives away, the second car will remain unlocked, unless the person driving away remembers to re-lock the second car.

That scenario assumes that the unlock message is very simple. Toyota probably uses a more complicated authentication protocol involving two way messaging. An "unlock" from the fob might only unlock one of the cars. It would depend on which car responded to the request to unlock first. That might not be the car at the end of the driveway that is blocking the unlocked car. Let me know when I am overthinking this. Stop me when I start talking about RSA tokens or cryptocurrency

None of "unlock" button scenarios would apply to me. I always just grab the door handle to unlock the car, and swipe the door handle to lock the car. Cool thing about my new 2017 Prius V four is that I can lock / unlock from either front door or the tailgate. I would love to retrofit my 2013 Prius V two to have that feature.

 

If you unlock the doors using the fob, and don't open a door, the car will automatically lock the doors after a minute or so.

We experienced this same "problem" last weekend (only had the car for two months, so don't be harsh) and I was thinking "door ajar". After checking all the doors and hatch, I asked my other half "Is your fob in the car?". Um yup.

Would putting the fob in power save mode override this, or is that the RFID that detects the fob while it's in the car?

 

What is 'power save mode' on the key fob, and how does one enable it?

 

It apparently basically "turns off" the fob and says it can be used to prevent it's battery from running down as fast. (I guess otherwise it';s always looking for a signal)

For the 2017/Gen 4 fob - says to hold down "lock" and press "unlock" twice. The LED should flash four times to confirm. Press any button to "wake it up".

It's mentioned in the manual several times. One place is it is mentioned is when you wash the car and the door handles get wet, if the fob is withing range, it will cause the doors to lock and unlock repeatedly unless you move the fob out of range or shut it down as above.
