I’ve had the same fob since I got the car, and in the last year or two the rubber covering the buttons has worn away completely, so the electronics inside are visible. I figure it’s probably a good idea to get a backup now just in case this one dies on me unexpectedly, how difficult/expensive is this process usually?
For $10 you can get a new case: Replacement Car Key Fob Remote Shell Case For Toyota Prius 2007 2008 2009 3Bto | eBay It requires you to cut open the seam of your old fob with a razor blade and then put the electronics into the new case. Also don't forget the little tiny black rectangle-shaped RFID chip inside there. People too often forget that piece and lose the car's ability to sense when the fob is nearby.
Youtube and very easy to replace the covers. Buy oem if you can the knocks tends to be cheaper in material but my knock off has lasted a 2 years no problems. SM-A526U ?
I replaced both of my fobs in November of 2018 with these from Amazon I also purchased these silicone sleeves to protect the hard plastic It's not difficult and not expensive.
You're welcome. Important notes: 1. Make sure you get the correct fob. There is a difference between two of them. Get the one that has the same color Toyota logo on the back (either black or silver/chrome). 2. As described above, make sure you also transfer the black RFID chip along with the little circuit board to your new fob. 3. Transfer your old metal valet key to the new fob too. That way you don't have to deal with a locksmith cutting the blank one that comes with it.
Ask some locksmiths in your area. Not only can they probably sell you a "spare" FOB, they can sell you a new cover too.
You should have a spare just in case. Far cheaper than if the 1 key you have gets lost or broken. Don]t forget to get the lockout key cut.
