Violent engine shaking at startup. Miss fire codes all cylinders

    Drove my newly repaired 2010 Prius to work today and it runs better than I remember in recent history. Engine starts are so smooth! I assume the head gasket must have been slightly leaking for a while before it became really bad, and it gradually got worse.

    I honestly don't remember ICE starts being this smooth before. Seems to run better too. Maybe all the intake, head, and EGR cleaning helped.

    It has new oil of course, and I plan to change this again this weekend. I figure it will help clean out any gunky coolant/oil residue in the system.

    Now that I have done this once I bet I could do it again in one day. But it took me 4 due to learning, reading, and second guessing all the while. I would say the hardest part in assembly was putting the timing cover back on. Hardest part in disassembly was getting the EGR assembly out. In retrospect, it would have been much easier if I just unscrewed the studs holding the EGR to the engine.

    This forum made it all possible. Could never have done it without you guys.

    Now I've got to find a cheap source for those darn plastic underengine cover clips... :)

    I bought mine at the dealer. They were oddly cheap, but you have to buy them in bags of 10.

    As far as the first oil change, I’d recommend 300-500 miles. That gives time for everything to settle into place. If you change it too soon, the detergents done get time to do their thing.

    You have a leak on your head gasket...it make the spark plugs to get wet when engine is off and miss fire when starting

    I did replace my engine because it had 200k miles and was really expensive to fix...so i swapped for an engine with 27k milles on it for $2500...sorry to tell you this but you have to put a lot of money on your engine...if you want to fix the one you have with over 200k miles it cost more than 1800...
    For me it work out better change the engine...it comes with new water pump...new spark plugs new o2 sensor new coils for ignition...i suggest do the same if you want to keep your car...now it runs like new again.

    Thanks for your reply. You are right, it was the head gasket. That's what this thread is all about actually. Fortunately I was able to replace it myself with the help of everyone here on PC. Still running great! Cost me about 100 dollars, but I really cheaped out (Gasket, coolant, sealant, plugs). It's a lot of work, but I found it very satisfying since I would probably have had to junk the car otherwise at 207K.

    Oh no...just had 2017 Prius V serviced at 185,000 miles...since immidietly after that service, it has been shuddering and misfiring at basically every start...the car idles for hours at times, and every ICE boot up to charge it shakes for 5-10 seconds. The last Prius V, a 2012, did the same infrequently, and when we asked the dealer to check itno it, he said that means it needs a new ICE engine and plopped a rebuilt one in for like $5000. (company car, they pay whenever for whatever the dealer tells them to :-| ) After reading this thread, checked the coolant now 500 miles (less than a week) after the service, and it's about 1 inch (2-3cm) BELOW the LOW marker. This car has to last until August and then we send it to the crusher...if we just keep powering through with the shake will the ICE eventually blow up? Do not want to have my bosses aprove $5000 on a car that is set to be scrapped in a few months, and a slight shake = new engine per dealer, so not concerned about "lettting it go and making it worse", because this dealer knows how to treat (mistreat) a corporate client.

    I have marked the level with tape hot and after hours of on time...I guess if it goes down more that is a 100% sign of head gasket failure? The car has never had a signle issue at all whatsoever in its life, but it's 2012 predecessor needed a new engine and new hybrid drive battery at 135,000 miles...that car was then immediatelly traded in for $500 to the same dealer for this new Prius...ugh.

    It it was fine before the service, then you should take it back and tell them to reconnect whatever
    they disconnected. You could just have a leak.
    Perhaps you should move this to the GEN4 section, this is GEN3.

    The 2012 is a different engine then the 2017.

    This sounds very suspect....

    mmmmmmm???? I thought I had read they put the GEN4 setup in the later "V's".
    Perhaps I miss read it....
    Either way, "IF" it WAS fine BEFORE the service, which is really just an oil change???
    And not fine afterward, it's still suspect.

    Update from OP here.

    Just FYI, my 2010 Prius is still doing great after replacing the head gasket myself two years ago.

    240K miles now and going strong!

    You did a full clean out of Exhaust Gas Recirculation and intake?

    Oil catch can?

    Yes. Since I had to take the parts off anyway, figured I might as well clean them. That EGR cooler was a bugger to remove as I recall.
    Not sure the cleaning made any difference as they really didn't look too bad. No oil catch can.
