2020 oil changes: every 10,000 miles?

    Cool, at 10,000 miles they can be certified on mine also, but in the mean time @ 5000 miles it'll be on my own time. ( oil changes ). Each has there own.

    I continue to do oil changes every 5k miles as I do a lot of the things the manual considers severe. I have always brought my own oil and oil filter (and drain plug crush washer) to a Pep Boys next to me and have them do the service. $20 for labor AND they do a free tire rotation as well. If I were to bring in my own stuff to the dealer, they charge $40 for the oil change LABOR plus $35 for the tire rotation. So looking at $75 plus tax.

    I would love to have it done at Toyota just for the peace of mind that the techs know what they're doing for my car specifically and also have all work properly documented. But paying an additional $55 for the same work is just a little hard to swallow.... Going in for my final 25k maintenance this Saturday then will probably just continue the oil changes at Pep Boys. It's not rocket science doing oil changes on these cars.

    Every 5000 miles that would be 7 oil changes a year for me. I will keep it at the factory recommendation.

    Hey jteran5. how much is your oil , filter and washer ? I'm at $32.00 w/ toyota filter from dealer & mobil 1 from walmart. Can't beat the price for self oil changes at 5000 miles compared to $79.00 at the dealer for sure. Nothing to lose.

    Dealership sells me that oil too. Used to be even cheaper, they just kept copying previous invoice lol. Someone wised up finally, still a decent price though. I bring a gas container, get 8~9 litres at a time, do our sons vehicle too. :)

    My dealer is always sending me coupons for $10 synthetic oil changes with filter. I still change my own.

    I change mine every 5,000 miles, and as notoriously stingy as my beloved company is with their vehicle maintenance......so do they.

    Yep.
    no bout a doubt it....but I've noticed a trend where people who own vehicles that take OWNERSHIP of the ownership task have fewer troubles with their vehicles.

    Since I change my own oil the cost of each change is something like $20.
    That's with an OEM filter.
    This makes for easy math
    $400 extra dollars more or less for 200,000 miles.

    - somebody check my math, but that seems to me to be cheap at the price.


    One last thing.
    People who get into oil-wars often forget that OCI (oil change interval) is substantially different than OCI (oil check interval!)
    Everybody knows what the oil change interval is.....but almost nobody knows that one of the maintenance checks in the Warranty and Maintenance guide calls for the owner to check the oil LEVEL.

    If you at least do THAT you will probably be OK since most car owners only keep their car for about 120,000 miles, and even if you skip an oil change, that's probably not going to catch up with YOU, but rather the person who has to take care of the car on the back nine.

    My oil is a premium "boutique" oil. It's the most shear-resistant after comparing against Motul, Amsoil, and others and has a high TBN and moly in it. So it's pricey at $60 or so for the 4 LITER jug. Which is 4.2 quarts so I picked up an extra liter in case I was short (recommended is 4.5 QUARTS), also because I'm using a larger/taller filter and worried that 4.2 quarts might not be enough.

    I'll price out below per quart after all said and done as I bought extra oil to get a discount after $100 with vendor (prices are USD) :

    Oil - $51.71 for 4.5quarts ($11.49/qt)
    Filter - $9.56
    Crush washer - $3.50 from Toyota Dealer

    Total : $64.77 for supplies

    What I had pictured is a magnetic drain plug for peace if mind it will catch anything in there. It's a $35 plug but I won't have to change THAT again and just pay once.

    Again, this oil is pricey but very very good specs. Haven't seen anyone close that low of a NOACK

    I have put 300,000 km on my Prius 2010 and follow the 10k recommendation. Engine still run like a new one.

    Just got a 2021 XLE AWD-e, planning on doing the first oil change at 2500m. I have lifetime oil changes through the dealer but I doubt they'll do that one for free. But it's no matter if they do or not. I just don't want to crawl under the car and do it myself these days. I'm ok with 10,000 mile oil changes. Had a 2013 Prius v and still have a 16 Tacoma following the 10k interval. Neither one used any appreciable amount of oil between changes. The Prius had 180k miles and the Tacoma has 100k. The only Toyotas I had that used oil I had those high performance mesh air filters. I've gone back to regular air filters these days.

    Just a thought as a (Chrysler) dealer Tech....manufactures are ONLY concerned with making the car last to the end of the warr. period....thats IT. They have a vested interest in selling you a new one after warr. is up, NOT making a car last 100k plus. Oil burning/engine issues following the long change interval is VERY common on ALL makes as miles go up. I certainly wont be going 10k on my new Prius. If you do mostly highway, can prob push it some, but I'll be sticking to 5k. While I don't have a ton of experience with hybrids as of yet, I would think if you do alot of slow/town driving, and with all the start/stop of the ICE , thats even harder on the oil.

    I'm getting mine every 5k. But I use my car for commercial purposes where it may not be racking up the "miles" but does the "hours."

    If it was for personal use, I'd only do it 10k.

    That was the Toyota Canada recommendation, for third gen. Now with fourth gen they're saying the same as the States: yearly or 16K kms, whichever comes first. Third and fourth gen engines are not that different, essentially the same, so it seems mainly a policy change, NOT driven by the engineers.
