I have a 2013 Prius V. I've been debating about upgrading the headcluster using a headcluster from a 2015 and on. Does anyone have any experience or know if this is possible to do? is it simple as plugging it in or what? I can't seem to locate anything on the forum about it.
No, 2012 and 2013 are the same. Many wrecking yards say 2014 is the same, but I am skeptical. 2015 and 2016 are the same. The 2017 is again different, although I am also skeptical, since they have different board part numbers.
You might find more information by searching for combination meter, Toyota’s term (in service documentation) for what is usually called the instrument cluster. The head unit is for the radio or navigation system. In the editions of the Repair Manual (more info) for model years 2013 and 2015, see the Terminals of ECU pages in the Meter/Gauge System section. The shapes of the two connectors (L27 and L125) for the combination meter are the same for both years, but there are a few terminals used only on the later model, for steering pad switches and a local bus connection to the navigation receiver assembly. I don’t know what would happen if those weren’t connected, and of course, there may have been other changes to CAN bus messages, which might keep a newer combination meter from operating properly in an older vehicle.
