How to download repair manual from TIS

The toyota information system contents toyota vehicle repair manual which used to be PDF links, it's now chm mode which is only webpages. I am trying to download the manual for my vehicle in two days and here is the fastest way I figured out.

Please share if you have better idea. I can't make those hyper-link work since they all became image in the pdf files.

    Tools you will need

    Firefox

    PDFCreator

    TIS login account ($15/2 days)

Install PDFCreator, create a new profile, change the Auto-save option; Change the filename to <Title>, update the directory for auto-save. You need create a new printer to use this new profile, which can auto save your pdf to particular folder.

Login TIS and open the repair manual, for the first page, make sure you selected the new PDFCreator printer as your current printer and print your first page, double check the pdf file at the auto-save folder and make sure that fits you want. I took the footer and header off so it looks much nicer.

For firefox, type “about:config” in the address bar and add print.always_print_silent as Boolean and set it to true.

Now, for each page you click on the left, there is a print icon on the top right corner, click that will print a new pdf file to the auto-save folder. For each page, you will need two clicks to save to pdf format.

Go through all your pages and hit the printer icon. You should be able to download the repair manual in couple hours. The PDF files will have the full text title in the pdf file name, which you can easily search.

I got my two vehicles' repair manual done in 7 hours.

Not bad for a $15 subscription.

Do you need to be a member of the NASTF before purchasing a subscription?

Back in '15 it was $15. Must have changed it somewhat recently...

Yeah, it was changed in the last couple years IIRC.

Never mind what the original post says about "CHM" - that's an old Microsoft format that's not related to what you get from TIS. The manuals and wiring diagrams are pretty much straight HTML with PNG images, the wiring diagrams use a bunch of SVG and JavaScript for all the cool navigating features. Pretty much all standard web stuff.

Do you recall if there were any tricks to using the Firefox PDFCreator method described above or did it go easily for you first time?

    No experience with Firefox .

The PDF creator I used did work;).

    Just a slow process:whistle:.

They didn't make it easy for mass downloading, but that's to be expected(y).

The documents have hyperlinks (did I name that correctly?). They go directly to specific sections in other documents. If there's a big job I may subscribe again and use the links to find exactly what I need to follow...

I am having a very slow time registering to pay the $20.00?? Hopefully it will not be this slow when I try to research my repair procedure. I am mostly interested in the transmission removal procedure.

The very part I hate most about their site. Once I'm in it's dandy. But their process for paying the $20 and getting the access turned on is something out of the stone age. Even if you're already registered and just saying "here's another $20, I'd like two more days please" it's like a dozen steps even when nothing goes worngg.

Finally they agreed to take my $20.00 . In the end it worked great with my standard printer. No reason to go page by page with a pdf creator. Trying to sort through a giant pdf manual would be hell. I printed all procedures related to the damper replacement. I figure 20 bucks for any major job is not a problem and well worth the instant links between all parts of the job.
I also got a job worktime estimate. It should take 8.5 hours. (Times 4 for me.) I guess I will see what the dealer wants for this before deciding to do myself or not.

I just found that estimating feature the last time I signed in! Not sure if I had just never noticed it before, or it was new since my last visit.

That gives me an idea of what the dealer should be charging once they confirm their official hourly rate. I will buy all the parts first so I am able to go either way depending how fair the dealer is.

I'm sorry I missed your posts on this topic! I assume you got everything you need? I use .pdf Creator on other vehicle brands as well. Sometimes it does not create a file name as the title of the repair document and causes a mess of the files. You can set it so that it will make techinfo 1, techinfo 2, techinfo 3, etc, a unique file name each time you "print", but this sometimes leads to duplicates, especially if you are all worn out after doing it for hours and hours. Not sure I figured out how to fix that bug, but I'm usually rushing to try to download as much as I can within the 2 days. For example for Porsche it's $15.xx per hour. (Now they don't even give owners' access. Sigh).

Never saw the time estimator, but I don't bring ours to the dealer much...

What is the file extension? If it's a .rar or .7z file, you'll just need to download a program to handle those - easy peasy.

Thanks to this advice, and a lot of trial and error from myself I now have a single 200 MB PDF of the 2013 Prius C Repair Manual that is fully searchable like 7,500+ pages :) Working on the Electrical Wiring Diagram next.

Has anyone tried downloading the repair manual using MacOS? I downloaded the repair manual using Windows back when I had my 2010 Prius and would like to do the same for my 2022 Venza, only using MacOS this time. Don't want to throw away $20 if it can't be done. Thanks!
