Oil Catch Can, Eliminate that knock!

    I've had an OCC for close to 4 years and haven't needed to add steel wool. In the cool Michigan climate the engine has not startup knocked yet. But no oil burning yet so YMMV.

    I found this article explaining how catch cans work and with some helpful diagrams for how PCV systems work. Interestingly, they recommend a catch can on the crank vent line (coming off the valve cover) also. Seems probably unnecessary on the Prius. (of course, they're advertising their own product in this blog, which I have no endorsement for or experience with).

    Hmm, you could run that line to-and-from the Oil Catch Can(s) too, with T-connections.

    I think it would need to be a separate catch can. Otherwise, you would be creating a big vacuum leak and probably messing up the intended flow of clean air into the top manifold port.

    Your setup looks pretty sweet. Double high quality catch cans! Will be excited to see if you think this was worth it.

    I was able to get 1/2 inch PEX fittings (male on each side) pressed into the OEM hose cut in half. Took a small amount of grunting but they did go in (I hope the hose doesnt spit when it gets cold or something like that, but I am also not the strongest individual so if I was able to press them in by hand I dont think they are too crazy tight). I then just plumbed the entire system (using Amazon Ruein catch can) onto 1/2 inch ID fuel line - easy peasy. The Amazon catch can came with 1/2" (or something close to that probably in a metric size) fittings.

    Can't really vouch for effectiveness since I havn't used it much yet but I dont see why it wont work. Now the question is do I trust the steel wool that came with the Amazon catch can or buy a higher quality that might not shed metal pieces. Anyone have a recommendation on best steel wool to use?

    Thats a pretty good idea but it doesnt really seem to be sufficient for the requirements of the Prius. Maybe we should be installing "oil catch tanks". You know, maybe a 10 gallon tank with 3-4 seperate chambers, filters, a drain plug, maybe install a Oil Catch Tank Computer Management Module (OCTCMM) and ECU to provide data feed from each tank, including fullness level, temperature, oil dew point, exhaust carbon analytics, viscocity metrics on collected sludge, water vs oil content, pressure in each chamber etc. Would need a system of pumps for actively managing pressure in each tank, as well as a series of electonically actuated PCV valves. Could drill a hole in the bottom of the intake manifold and install a vaccum system that would move any oil the system that did not catch from the intake manifold back into the catch tank. Could place it in the rear footwell, or in the gap between the engine and the firewall.

    1855 kms since the fall drain, which yielded next to nothing, drained this at my spring oil change yesterday. I have two Moroso 85474 air/oil separators in series. Left side is first, about 50 cc, and maybe 50% oil. Right side is the second can, about 75 cc, mostly water (at bottom), with a skim of oil.

    Preparing to do an OCC install (this epic thread has been invaluable!). Still researching whether there might be more effective catch cans. Any thoughts on this 8oz one from Radium or are any of the inexpensive options with some steel wool just as good? It's about the cost of the Moroso, maybe a lil more bc the AN fittings are sold separately so it's pricey--they even have larger 'competition' cans. This one's got a dipstick and bottom port for a drain valve, great for mounting options, and looks very well made.

    Most members here have gone with cheapies. I did Moroso, but pretty much on a whim.

    this is a blatantly knee-jerk opinion, but anyway:

    if it rivals (surpasses?) Moroso 85474 cost, it’s likely well regarded.

    did you see good reviews?

    which port is inlet btw? That interior looks well thought out.

    I believe the top port is the inlet. Haven't really come across any reviews, just install videos on youtube.

    As long as you cut the original hose and splice into it, 3/8” ID works. SAE30R7 is readily available by the foot fuel line at most specialty automotive stores. If you’re pushing it onto hose barbs clamps are not really needed, might even be detrimental.

    Yes, about 3~4 years back. There’s some pics of my install, maybe 10~15 pages back. It’s not a cure-all, but it’s got to help, seeing the goop it catches.
