Steam coming from under the bonnet is a reasonable indicator of overheating coolant, or worse!

So the check engine light after around three starts and a few days is still present.

Does it need to be reset by dealership or will it eventually go off by itself?

There could be a code for many different reasons.

Did you try Carista and see if the codes can be read using it?

I’m pretty sure you can as it has a “diagnose” choice, but have not used it.

If you have ELM device that plugs into the OBD2 port, you can buy another app to read the codes. They can be had for less than $10.

Usually after 3 driving cycles when the car confirms everything is back to normal, it turns the light off.

But if the reason is different, it will set the light again.

Best to try and read the code and see what it is saying.

Hopefully the gas cap is it(y).

I connected the Carista and it took a while to read the codes. Came back with the following.

P1423 is an evap system leak, most likely from a gas cap;).

How far or how many drive cycles has the Prius done since the incident?

    Did you reset the code?

Does your wife know the reason the check engine light came on?

    Keep us posted (n).

Just to chime in on the engine coolant temp gauge phase out: I miss having it. It's good for monitoring warm-up, which is instrumental to improving mpg. If you're doing any grill blocking, using a block heater, many reasons. Rolls Royce would be a numeric display of temp. I had this with my ScanGauge, but it (apparently) started playing silly-beggars with the OBD port, I've had to disconnect it.

Yes, I reset it via Carista. Hopefully that will be the end of it. She did over 3 drive cycles of which one totalled over 40miles during the few days since I secured the gas cap as it wasn't seated correctly.

That's the biggest hint a gal could give her man to fill the car for her next time, without need for a 'pretty please'.

I just did a manifold clean, new plugs, ERG cooler etc and I have a check engine light on, hoping after a cycles it goes away - but I know what you mean by sweating it!
