2017 Prius V, 186,000 miles, head gasket went. Car still drives fine, just shudders for 2-3 seconds when the ICE kicks in. My last Prius V, 2012, did the same thing at 130,000 miles, and the dealer said it had to have the engine replaced when the head gasket goes. The same dealer is telling us the same thing, head gasket means they need to sell us a used engine for $6500...again...it's a corporate owned car, so they basically just expect someone to sign off on anything they say. They also tend to replace all 4 tires when one gets a nail because they don't do flat repairs...seriously.

So, I need to push my bosses to find an independent shop that believes that a head gasket is a servicable part, and not an iPhone with a dead battery that becomes landfill. What is the typical cost you guys have paid for this, what I am told is a common repair?

See if Gasket Masters will do it with their mobile service. I know they service the LA area. 209-305-1672. They include a rebuilt head in their reasonable price.

There has been a LOT of head gasket discussion on here but little to NO discussion about how to do the repair "right".

It isn't like replacing a valve cover gasket.
Just throwing on a new gasket isn't good enough.

When it fails, the engine often overheats OR the oil runs low and causes lower engine damage.......or both.
Overheating can warp the heads or crack the block.

A competent repair will at a minimum test the head(s) and the block mating surface for warpage.
An even better repair will also inspect the crankcase bearings.

Once you do all of that, a rebuilt engine starts to look like a reasonable alternative.

No overheating, no smoke out the tailpipe, no low oil...the coolant was low, but thats it...blown between the #3 and #4 pistons.

Makes no difference what the symptoms were, warpage of the metal parts might have created the gasket failure.
Just throwing a new gasket at it is a half-assed fix.

That's all I did.... but I didn't drive it after the morning I went out and sounded terrible on start.... checked the reservoir seen it was down and new it was the dreaded expected junk toyota head gasket...that was 20,0000 miles ago.
    vehicle never got hot........

you did the right thing, a lot of people won't and will continue to drive it incurring more damage.

I had a S10 back in the day that blew a HG due to an overheat I got a reman head and put a new HG on it and it was fine for many many more years until the freeze plugs started to leak all of this due to bad Dexcool coolant.

I would rather put in a different engine and trani than do the head gasket again.

I literally just dropped off my vehicle at Hybrid 911 in the LA/southbay area. It has good reviews, but I've never had service there before. They specialize in swapping Prius engines. Head gasket replacement is 1600 for my 2012 prius V. The Toyota dealership quoted me 3445.00USD for the same service. Hybrid 911 would do a "new" engine for 2k. I put new in quotes do to skepticism, but uh, I may just ask for the engine stamp and verify with Toyota.

Genuinely wish I had the know how and tools/equipment to do so. I don't, so I have to default to a service shop. This Hybrid 911 place gave me the best quote I've seen in my area. They have a few shops, and are well reviewed, just gotta cross my fingers and hope that counts for something.

Normally I would suggest replacing the engine, especially for only $4k more. Of course it will be a used gen3, perhaps with a rebuilt head and possibly with far less miles. However Toyota sold very few 2017 v's and not many 16's. They sold a boatload of the problem childs, eg 2010-2014s. So the replacement is likely to be an early gen3 with poor pistons and rings unless someone did a complete rebuild. I would be tempted to keep my 2017 engine assuming they rebuilt the head as necessary.

Touching base, the engine they offered is a refurb with high miles. a decent newer engine would be 3500 and up they said.

Head Gasket is just the 1600 though! doing that, passing on the engine, don't have the cash for the larger purchase currently.

Yeah new engines list for $7~8K USD IIRC.

A new short block is worthy of consideration if you’ve got runaway oil consumption; they’re a more reasonable $2K. The short block is everything below the head gasket. I’d take that over rebuilding the block.

one thing that helps me put the $’s in perspective, I can drop a grand or two at the dentist, easily.

Good plan. $400 more for an older engine is a poor deal when you start with a 2017. How long will they take to do the head gasket? Warranty?

    Oh related/unrelated.

Toyota had just replaced my inverter under warranty less than a month ago. As I go to get this vehicle back from the independent shop replacing my head gasket... they said it was coding on the test drive. P0aa6 613. As in my transaxle. My funds are drained and I am mentally exhausted. Doubt Toyota will assist this time around.
