So I bought a cheap fog light kit for my 2005 Prius on eBay. The kit is actually pretty high quality and I've got the wiring and everything hooked up and the lights work great. My dilemma is that I cannot figure out how to run the switch inside the cab. I can't find anywhere that is accessible to run the wires through the firewall. I removed the wipers and the cowl and whatnot, hoping that'd give me better access behind the engine/inverter, but I just can't find a good place to bring the wires from under the hood to inside the cabin. Does anyone have any suggestions? Any help at all would be greatly appreciated, I've been stumped on this for over a week now - there just doesn't seem to be a good location to get this to work.
Something reminds me that if you locate the rubber grommets where the existing wire harnesses go through the firewall, you'll find that each grommet normally includes one or two extra 'nipples' that you can poke through to put a few extra wires through; no drilling required.
That's the thing - I cannot get to the grommets at the firewall because both the engine and the inverter are in the way. I'd hate to have to remove the inverter just to run a small set of wires, but I'm not sure there is any other option.
I got to the driver's-side grommet in my 2010 without a whole lot of trouble ... I may have removed the wipers and cowl, but that's to Prius wrenching just what "chop ½ onion" is to cooking.
On our 2011 Gen 3, it was easier to poke through the rubber grommet with a wire coat hanger from the driver's footwell, then locate it on the engine side of the firewall. Once you locate the wire, attach your wires to the stiff wire and pull it through. In the Gen 3, the rubber grommet is slightly above the brake pedal. Good luck squeezing and contorting your body into the footwell under the steering wheel. The grommet on our 2014 Corolla is in a similar spot as well, so the Gen 2 Prius should be in the same general area. Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
