Featured California APPROVES Aftermarket Catalytic Converters!

Is this an erroneous post intentional or non? The site advertises inappropriate advertising content, instructs you to download to scan for viruses, and after looking up the executive order number referenced, there is none on the CARB website. Site looks like complete malware, and the OP's doesnt reference to actual CARB website.

 

The information kindly shared above by @fullylaced1 is essentially correct: it’s not quite “any Prius,” but most second- and third-generation models are covered. I didn’t have any problem viewing the linked document.

The official listing from the California Air Resources Board (PDF) confirms that Executive Order D-193-151 was issued on April 14, 2021, for Car Sound Exhaust Systems, Inc. (Magnaflow) series 5631000 and 5671000 catalytic converters. CARB’s database of aftermarket catalytic converters has a copy of the order, which I’ve attached below, since it can’t be linked directly on CARB’s site.

The approved (“exempted”) applications are:

• Toyota Prius, model years 2004–2015
• Toyota Prius Plug-in, model years 2012–2015
• Toyota Prius v, model years 2012–2015
• Toyota Prius c, model years 2012–2016
• Lexus CT 200h, model years 2013–2015

The order references Section (h) of the California Evaluation Procedures for New Aftermarket Catalytic Converters (PDF), which requires the installation instructions to impose some additional conditions, including that “The vehicle is more than 7 years old or has more than 70,000 miles on its odometer” and that it is “beyond the coverage of the OEM catalytic converter warranty period.” It’s not clear to me whether these conditions would be enforced, in practice, by installers, at Smog Check stations, or at all.

At this writing, the Magnaflow website doesn’t seem to have been updated with information about the newly-approved parts. I imagine it might be some time before they’re available, since Magnaflow may not have started making them until CARB approval was granted.

 

I will believe it when members start reporting that cats are being openly shipped to addresses behind the curtain.

 

Thanks @Elektroingenieur @fullylaced1 and sorry if i'm wrong here. I had done a quick google search and couldnt find the executive order, and as you can see from the screen shot below, i got an ad to scan my computer for viruses which made me think it was malware.

So it *appears* the CARB (California Air Resources Board) has FINALLY followed its own guidelines and approved some aftermarket cats for sale/installation inside California! Just happened in April 2021...good work, people!

That’s the manufacturer, yes, and you’ve linked to “universal” (but not approved for sale/use in CA) listing pages...the models covered under E.O #D-193-151 appear to be *new* models not yet available, even on the pages you linked to. Or, I just did not find them.

IOW none of the Prius models on the pages you linked to are legal to install/use in California, they are only “CARB approved” for use in other states following CARB standards. That’s been the obscene part all along.

 

I noticed you can not select CA nor CO. That’s kind of wack.

Gonna take a trip up to UT this month was debating trying to order something for our v while there, because you can’t even get them shipped to you here in Cali is my understanding.

 

Just a hunch, the aftermarket cat approved for Cali will cost more than their usual, some “sweet spot” between their reg price and Toyota’s. But who knows.

 

i'd like to see pollution specs from a carb approved setup vs cali approved oem.

It appears there are some models for the Prius V, here are the results from a search for 2014 Prius V:

 

They are going to need to recoup the cost of testing/approval for CA. I would be amazed if it's less than $800.

 

It seems like the CARB site is more updated than the Magnaflow website, which is where I saw CA and CO shaded out for your 2006!

This is great news for us CA and CO owners. (I wonder how angry my wife would be if we need to make room to pack one of these into the car).

I don't think they have any of these new items listed for sale yet. If so, I imagine they'll go into backorder status immediately! The E.O> is only a couple of weeks old.

I'm guessing the price is going to be closer to the $3,000 OEM price than the current CARB-approved units are.

 

In principle, they should be equivalent, i.e., a vehicle’s emissions with an approved (exempted) aftermarket catalytic converter should meet the “applicable full useful life new vehicle exhaust emission certification standard.” See the “California Evaluation Procedures for New Aftermarket Catalytic Converters” (PDF), subsection (e)(4)(C), Emissions Performance Measurement and Evaluation.

 

As far as "useful life" goes, point #6 of the E.O. says the warranty has to be 5 years or 50k miles. (This does not address emissions testing/results, of course, so is kind of non-responsive)

 

Tried parts.toyota.com says the catalytic converter for a 2006 Prius has been discontinued. What's going on???
