Maybe you could network with your neighbors and friends and try to rent/borrow a garage?

What did you do to your Prime today?

Should I find a mechanic in advance that installs the cat converter cover?

Any suggestion for a mechanic that could do it in the Bay Area? thank you in advance :)

FWIW, I used a floor jack and 6 X 6 timbers to get the car up to about 12", but was still restrictive (OK, I'm a fat old geezer) so decided to see what one of the local mechanicswith a lift would charge: $50.... SOLD~! Had him do it to avoid any further angst and he did a great job.

Miller Cat Shield has a list of installers on their website;).

All the install requires is a way to raise your Prime and I swapped some of their fasteners for rivets:).

Any mechanic can handle if you buy the shield I would say(y).

Do you all think that the Toyota Rebates of 4k+1k in California will go away after May 3rd?

If the California state rebate goes away, Toyota will likely increase their incentives to match it. The high incentives in the Northeast are there, in part, because the states don't have such generous incentives.

I just called a dealership that has the Cat Shield and can install it but they only do it for older Priuses. They told me Toyota doesn't have a cat shield for newer models because it's better protected apparently, is this true??

Well, I believe the older models used more platinum and other valuable metals in them, which is why they are targeted by thieves. It is also possible that the current model has more belly pans for aero.

The underneath of your Prime will resemble the underneath of our 2019 Prime:):

What did you do to your Prime today?

While better protected, I wasn't going to chance it;).

Now when I trek out into the great unknown, I have piece of mind (y).

I have had three PPs and assure you the 2021 catalytic converter is very much unprotected. I ordered a Miller Cat Shield and opted to have a local mechanic do the installation, as he only charged $50... I did, however, first jack up the car and assess the install myself and the cat IS very much exposed. Here's a shot of a PP shield from the Miller website:

Thank you all! I've decided to do this as soon as I get the car. Also a local mechanic I called said he'd charge $350 for parts and labor. Maybe I should order this in advance and ask him only for labor?

OK so I made a list of things that I will need when buying this car

    - Garage space: I can negotiate this. Right now I only have street parking.
    - Cat Shield: Miller Cat Shield ($140). I'll buy it in advance and bring it to the mechanic the day I get my new car.
    - Car Insurance: I've read a comprehensive car insurance may be best for a PP? Looking into Geico and Costco. Geico: 1500$/year for less coverage (15k body injury, 5k property damage, 18.5k uninsured motorist,) or 4000$/yr for more coverage (15k body injury, 25k property damage, 18.5k uninsured motorist, +comprehensive: $500 deductible, collision $500 deductible, mechanical breakdown $250 deductible )
    - Should I buy an anti-theft device? Does the PP come with any?

    Am I forgetting anything important?

for $350. i would let him take care of everything, as long as you know him and his work. make sure he replaces the panels properly, might need new fasteners

prius has an immobilizer. might want to cht with your ins. co. about theft and alarms. sometimes it depends on where you live, i have never had one.

Use priusoffroad10 for 10% off at Miller, also may want to consider using the stainless steel model, for a few $$ more. A mechanic with a lift should be able to complete the job in 30 minutes. The hard part is getting the car high enough off the ground for access... hence having a lift really helps.

Prime Insurance is expensive for a new prius and a new driver!

Geico: 1500$/year for less coverage (15k body injury, 5k property damage, 18.5k uninsured motorist,)
    or
4000$/yr for more coverage (15k body injury, 25k property damage, 18.5k uninsured motorist, +comprehensive: $500 deductible, collision $500 deductible, mechanical breakdown $250 deductible )

My gut tells me to get the more coverage/premium for now. I called AAA and the rates were about the same.
    Progressive was more expensive.

Do you think I'll have more luck if I get a Costco membership? I'm not a Costco member

Any advice on insuring a new PP w/new driver is more than welcome

It won't ease your pain right now, but it does eventually get better (I'm an old geezer who lives in a low risk area):
