I still doubt it has anything to do with spark plugs and coils which were done years ago, but I definitely feel more educated on this situation thanks to everyone’s input. I understand that now it’s unlikely that the oil has caused my car’s demise, and more likely it had to do with the told the previous owner’s mistreatment took on it.

Matter of fact, doesn’t even matter anymore since my car is gone now anyway.

nonetheless, it’s good that I’m more educated now

It's not something that professional mechanics care much about currently.
Any real studies probably occurred 40 years ago or more......back in the hay day of STP......and that was before everything got published digitally.

Then, it depends on what is causing the oil loss.
There are several common causes and a thicker oil won't help all of them.

It is something to try which is relatively cheap and easy.
An oil designed to help with high mileage oil loss is the best choice because it tries to address at least two of the most common causes.

If you insist on seeing "proof" you probably will be disappointed.

Nope. There will be no "toning it down" as long as people like you continue to make posts that proclaim certain disaster when doing something.......and then try to defend that bad post as simply relating a personal experience......when you did NOT present it that way in the beginning.
Using the right words is important. And THAT is true information.

The big problem with Our Prius is sometimes the owner finds out it’s eating oil only because the engine light comes on because there’s so little oil in the engine the oil pump went dry and car had zero oil pressure which is extremely bad.
A few of those and the engine is damaged. No one checks there oil anymore.
Which means it’s spent a lot of it’s life in starved oil condition. Sometimes that damages the engine and on a g2 that’s a rod bearing and the piston likes to come off and exit out the block. Usually cylinder #2. Seen a bunch of those here and a few you tubes on that also.

You checking the oil often and keeping it at the full line was excellent keep doing that with all your subsequent cars it will really pay off.

Lmao you seriously need to chilllll. I’ll own up to that I made a mostly false assumption and I was actually going to edit the original post but it seems like I can’t. I really don’t know what you want from me.

    That.
    Thank you.

In this case, it likely isn't that serious but it is a bad habit to get into because that is how "urban legends" are created and some of them end up being quite serious.

The worst that can happen from this thread is somebody using the oil RECOMMENDED BY THE MANUFACTURER.
You’ve been a mechanic for 60 years right? So you must be at least like 70 years old and you’re over here trying to pick a fight on an Internet forum with a 19-year-old who’s car got destroyed, and is struggling to get a new one.
Okay maybe the title is a bit misleading but if you read the original post, sure it may be wrong, but I just said my story and it’s not like I’m out here trying to spread misinfo. Just take it easy man. I don’t mind how everyone else corrected me but respectfully, but you don’t gotta come at people like that honestly.

You've been Sammed. It's a PriusChat phenomenon that everyone ends up dealing with in their own way. Some eventually discover the Ignore User option.

The problem with that is, the way it works on PriusChat, if you have a user on ignore, you don't see anything they post, even quoted inside other people's replies. Often, if you're reading through a thread, you can tell which people have Sam on ignore when you see them reacting to somebody else's post that they haven't realized was really a reply to Sam.

For example, it's possible (though I'm not positive) that Ed's "sorry meant no offense" back in post #27 could have been because Ed couldn't tell you were replying to Sam, and wondered if your post was directed at him instead.

Thanks. I have always been having doubts about the thicker oil suggestion...

Moving up to 40 weight oil is the first thing you should do when you notice oil loss. It really helps.

Only drawback is if you live in consistently freezing temperatures then it may become an issue.

With this new information, I’m here to tell you Ed that if I sounded less than enthused in my responses, it was not directed towards you, rather it was directed toward an individual who was speaking to me in a rather egregious way.

I check mine at every fillup.

Of course, this past year, that means both times.
