Check Engine Light/No A/C

    Greetings, a Check Engine light has appeared on my 06's dashboard, and the A/C isn't working properly (seems to be a problem with air cooling). What could be the cause of this?

    Many code readers don't read hybrid car error codes and sub codes very well. But Dr. Prius app does pretty good at that. Here's a link to inexpensive device you need to read those error codes: priusapp.com/obd.html

    Moonlight has probably dried out the insulation on the HV cables.

    Seriously: the trouble codes responsible for the check-engine light come from the engine control module, and should be readable by any decent OBD-II code retrieval tool. The ECM is not one of the car's mystery computers that only fancy scan tools know about.

    Some of the possible ECM trouble codes will be Toyota-specific, and a generic scan tool might just show you the codes and not say what they mean (or, worse, give you a fortune cookie for what they mean in some other car). But the fortune cookies for the codes are pretty close to useless even when they're right, so that's not much of a loss. The main thing is to have the codes themselves, then look them up in the repair manual, which is where you really find out what's what.

    Codes for the HVAC system can be retrieved just by holding the AUTO and RECIRC buttons while powering the car on. Look for two-digit numbers in the top corner of the MFD.

    Try removing the negative battery terminal for 20 min and plugging back in

    Ideally, retrieve and make note of the diagnostic codes before doing that. Disconnecting the battery will clear them, and if you don't know what they were, you will be delayed in resolving any underlying problems by however long it takes the car to detect and report them again.
