Record your Prime and Gas Fill-ups

    There's some consistency here but please note that I drive different conditions and routes every day. These numbers displayed are for the most shutting off EV after reaching 15% give or take 5. Do any of these numbers match up to about what you were getting using all your EV up at first or combo there of? I supply a couple pictures showing recent MPG over the last couple weeks...if it's similiar

If so then maybe there's not much of a difference but me personally I seen about a 6-11 mpg boost over normal way I used to go about it. Just ev used up and switch normal over a 200 Mile commute. Also if there is a ton of highway driving leaving that extra juice does give better mpg. You can confirm this by turning ev off (leaving some juice) going into trip display (reset) in OD and see that drive ev motor being used at a certain percentage under info. Meaning its helping assist because its off in general. So for example I'll see EV 9% over set time and x miles under trip "b". Knowing I set trip "B" on the freeway and have been on the freeway for say about 10 minutes/11 miles etc and ev motor 8% usage aka assist. That's what I got out of it anyways. So if you use all the juice up it can't assist and now you have a regular prius type talk. Who knows I could have received a placebo fan boi shot but my math proved me wrong. LoL

    8.8 is correct, however the watt meter will only total actual charge and the size of storage is not relevant. Each days mileage and actual energy used is the key to determine real MPGe. I expect around 40. My driving habits will not change, so I am certain many could do better than me. I will include the math when done.

    Right, especially there's a reserve amount obviously even after full charge that can't be used. I don't think the 8.8 is full use per charge. Maybe 7 to 7.8.

    Yes when you get the stats and man I hoped I helped you out, please let all of us now. That way all prius prime chat member can get a extra boost out of nothing. It sure seems to work for me.

    Also please note I would use your ev on freeway or in long stretches. Just leave that reserve and reset the trip odometer and that by itself should tell you if it's better in general after a trip or 2 based on your math.

    I thought the total capacity of the battery pack was 8.8kWh and the kWh to charge to full was around 6.3 kWh since the car reserves part of the battery for normal hybrid function?

    8.8 kWh is the generally accepted total capacity per the brochure. I've read from lots of sources that the exact number is 8.79, but who care about that much precision, right?

    6.3 is pretty close to what it take from fully zero EV range to 100% on the car's SOC indicator. However, that can vary by quite a bit depending on how deep the zero EV range has dipped into the HV part of the battery.

    Also, it not only reserves a level of charge for HV driving after EV runs out, it reserves the bottom 12% more or less and the top 17% more or less to protect the battery from premature aging. You can see those real SOC numbers in lots of different OBDII phone apps, a Scanguage, or Techstream.

    As for MPGe, I wish those idiots at the EPA had never invented the silly term. Here's what you need to know. How much does it cost to drive in EV and how much in HV. For me, EV costs about two cents per mile. HV is a little under five cents per mile. Knowing the MPGe in EV mode is pointless. MPGe does nothing except confuse people who don't know what it means. Cost per mile is the only thing your wallet knows or cares about.

    Ok.. so I was not entirely wrong. I am looking at .03 cents per mile for EV and .05 cents per mile for HV (based on 55mpg). Pretty much the same as you. I like how you think Jerry! Side note: I think I want to get a scan gauge II to see all the parameters, I like the data .I also would like to "see" my tire pressures and engine RPM's. (RPM's just for fun)

    Thanks. But rather than the Scangauge, I'd suggest you explore the phone apps to see which one will show you what you want to see. They are much newer, less expensive, easier to use, and versatile. There is quite a variety of them out there. (PS. Did you mean three and five cents rather than three one hundredths and five one hundredths of a cent?)

    Wow! You must pay the national average of $.12/kWh for electricity, while us in So Cal pay 3x that.

    That'll depend on what phone you use. Android has some great stuff. Torque Pro has been a favorite for ages. Hybrid Assistant is another really cool Android app. So neat that I found an old Android phone so I can run it sometimes. But be aware that HA needs a pretty high-powered adapter so check it out on their website.

    On the iPhone side, there's Engine Link and OBD Fusion. Both competent dashboards and diagnostic tools.

    First fill-up for a 2021 Limited!
    705 miles, 9.83 gallons, 71.7 mpg. The in-dash computer read 74.1.

    Of the 705 miles, 251 were EV miles, so actual gasoline mileage was 46.2. A relatively low number is expected because most of my gasoline miles are at 65-75 mpg on highways. My 2010 Prius III was recently getting 40-42 mpg on the same highway.

    From the used % on the display, I think I've used about 53.6 kwh. Including a 12% charge loss penalty (which seems appropriate based on this forum), with electric cost of 10.7 cents per kwh, I have spent about $6.40 on electricity and $25.25 on gas. This makes cost per gas mile 5.6 cents and cost per electric mile 2.6 cents.

    Actually I get atleast 600 easy on just hybrid mode and for long hauls I dont enable my ev battery at all. Ev is good to use for up hills to regain most energy back going down hill. Ev is good to use if your planning on stopping somewhere to re-up juice or maybe last bit of trip. Beyond that I consistently get between 68 to 73 MPG over one charge per day with driving about 200 miles/day. Once that EV battery is spent you're just driving a regular Prius at that point. Always leave enough juice so you can get that extra MPG and charge the EV lithium in the process.

    I love this thread! Does anyone use an OBD2 device an the app Hybrid Assistant to log the data? Ive been working on a way to upload the database generated to a data visualizer... taking notes on dates like oil change, tire rotation, neew tires... as i want to see over say a year or two what and how my mpg came about. since it tracks elevation, gps all... im hoping others have as well. One thing I plan to prove is that when adding cross-drilled slotted rotors and ceramic pads, my plugin would build ev range faster from braking....

    than and.. a plugin is 4.4kWh can use a 8.8kWh from prime.. the rav4 prime 18.1kWh cant be used in our cars but the new 18.1kWh in the NX450h+ we can... that would mean.. my plugin could get 40+ miles on a full charge with a larger capacity battery... ill find out soon!

    in my head, glide, brake build, depending on the incline downhill during your drives, you could generate enough to never need gas... :: mind blown ::
