I think if I was a Prius plumber and had my 230 lb PITB I would put a 2” hitch and and use a equipment platform on it that I could lower to the ground I could hook a small electric winch operated off of the 12 volt battery. Rather than mess with the solar panels I would get an inverter and just let the engine do what it does (keep it charged)

I used to have a dodge ram that got about 8mpg, while rolling downhill with a strong tailwind. I've never been happier since trading it and getting a Prius. I joking call my Prius my "truck" and pretty regularly hall 8ft lumber, cinder blocks, mulch, tools big and small, even kayaks on the roof rack. I've never had any problems doing this, as the cargo space is very adequate with the rear seats down. Though I will say I've never gone over ~30 miles with such loads. Typically I'm just going around the corner, to and from the home center, but it handles it like a champ!

 

Ah, those were the days...I just filled up my F10 BMW M5, and with 91 gas at $4.15/gallon I'm licking my wounds with triple digit fill ups, and 255 mile range. I'm eyeing my GFs Prius spare keys as we speak to run some errands in the morning.

But a Weistec tuned twin turbo V8 is kind of worth it, too.

 

I looked, or am thinking about sorta just that, Paul. They have an electric "L" shaped hitch one that hooks on to the scooter and lifts straight up. My concern is that, that is a lot of weight behind the rear axle?

Heck, would not be hard to weld one and use a block and tackle........ Would just need tie downs. Have the towing hooks. I hadn't looked hard at that page. $1,800 is crazy for what that is. But would work. A lot easier then getting the monster in and out of the hatch-back.

I was really surprised at how much room they have before getting my first Prii. Ever see what folks do with making 'em campers? Some really cool ones. Some folks even live full time in their Priuses-s (Priis) Some pretty amazing stuff, people!

 

The machine without the coil would not be very heavy?

I see you've learned to just fold the rear seats forward, I have fit a 6'door in there! And actually that is way too much stuff in there! You can't see out back through the rear view mirror! Good way to get a ticket..

 

And be careful, the rear end suspension of a prius cannot handle much weight. Actually all of the weight is supported only by those struts which are little more than elongated fish oil shocks. I used to intermittantly haul an 8' utility trailer (not heavy) and after only about a year of that I needed to replace both shocks and one wheel bearing. PITA!

 

I am biting the bullet and pulled the trigger on using a Prius for a drain cleaning business. I guestimated fuel savings around $6,000 per year over E150 work van. Also my love of the thought of trying to help with the environmental aspects. It's actually my marketing approach. "Lean Mean and Green Drain cleaning"

Tools are about ,but less than (3ish passengers, depending on girth.400 LBS. So as not to hyjack this thread, gonna start one spcific to doing this;
