2018 nav radio reboots among other issues

    My 18 I've been noticing it becoming more consistent that within a minute or 2 of starting the car the radio will go black and reboot and it's good the rest of the drive (I typically drive an hour one way) and I've also noticed steering wheel controls seem off. Most issues seem to happen on xm. Sometimes it'll jump multiple presets and once when trying to change preset it went from SXM to AM. I didn't hit source button because from SXM source takes you to bluetooth. It seems software related. Anyone know of a way to check the software possibly do updates and make sure before dropping by the dealer? Too bad they don't do OTA updates

    That's what I was afraid of. Working for a dealer and Not driving your own product sucks sometimes when there's things only dealers can do

    I've got the 11.6 but being a 18 prius not prime it doesn't fall under the tsb you posted. It acts like firmware seeing as it only has these booting issues the first time after starting the car. Only the first time after starting the car using the steering wheel button up or down switches xm to am. It freaks it out just that once then it's good the rest of the trip. It also only happens on xm no other bands. Now that I think about it the car did fine until I updated the radio when I set up entune. When I paired the app for the first time it forced a radio update.

    I realize what’s listed in the “Applicability” section of T-SB-0031-20, but if you keep reading, you’ll see that the software applies to head units having any of the ID numbers listed on page four, including E7053 and E7054, which are used only on 2018 Prius models.

    Got it. It's a E7053 with version R10A7120. I had bad experience with my wife's pathfinder navi unit I did a tsb update for a 2013 but same model and S/N in her 14 and it bricked her radio. Will the basic 2 day TIS sub give me access to hyperlink to the software to create the usb and perform the tsb since it gives service manual access?

    That’s always a possibility, and one reason to consider having a dealer do the update, even if you have to pay for the labor.
    A two-day subscription is fine, but for access to download software and firmware, it has to be at the Professional Diagnostic level ($65). One of the two files mentioned in the bulletin (16TABDNA-AA01_1001.kwi, with updates through R10A8100), however, is available at no charge from Toyota’s securedp.toyota.com server, if you select 2019, Prius, With Navigation.

    We bought our 2017 Prius Four a year ago. It rebooted once during the first six months or so. It now reboots on first startup after a few minutes. Sometimes more than once. Some claim removing and re-adding the iPhone without contacts might be a workaround. Same result. There is some slight reassurance that I'm not the only one, but it's overshadowed by disappointment. Btw, I did check into the update, and it doesn't apply.

    Also worth noting that I mentioned the problem to the dealer, and they claimed to have not heard of this, and offered no options. After all the posts here and elsewhere, I find that pretty hard to believe.

    Might I ask how you determined this, please? Did you actually try installing an update?

    It’s long been known that the securedp.toyota.com website, for example, says “no updates available” for some models, even when Toyota’s own bulletins say otherwise.
    That’s unfortunate, since there have been several Toyota bulletins to dealers on this topic, all mentioning “Intermittent rebooting” as one of the conditions resolved. For the 11.6-inch (Denso) head unit, see T-SB-0236-17 (original, July 10, 2017; Rev1, January 11, 2018; Rev2, February 21, 2020) and T-SB-0031-20 (April 1, 2020) (all in PDF). There have also been several updates for the Panasonic head units.

    After looking at this, I now realize that it's not a time, but a location that is causing the reboot. I just happen to drive through that area about the same time each day. Disappointing that I have to pay for the fix, but at least there seems to be one available. A shame my dealer doesn't read these. I'd rather pay for the subscription than waste another day in their shop. Thanks so much for the info.

    I spoke with a representative at Toyota USA. They looked up my VIN, and claim there is no active service bulletin for the infotainment system. When I pointed out T-SB-0003-20 Rev1, they claim it does not apply to my car. The recommendation was to take it in to the dealers. Yep, the one that claims to have not heard of this problem, and didn't offer a solution.

    I'm still considering paying the Techinfo fee and taking a shot. Will report back if I do.

    So, I did go ahead with a Techinfo.toyota.com subscription. Sure enough, this SB was the first on the list after I logged in. Unfortunately, I was prevented from downloading the firmware file. A warning to anyone else who is tempted to try this. Not only do they restrict this access to dealers only, they will not return my payment. A complete waste of money as it turns out. It's absurd that Toyota doesn't allow access to this firmware update without paying a dealer.

    Which subscription did you buy? Was it the Professional Diagnostic subscription (from $65) or the Standard subscription (from $20)? The latter includes access to service bulletins but not “ECU Calibrations,” i.e., software and firmware files.

    I first tried the $20, and then upgraded to the $65 level. Still no access. It is apparently restricted to dealers only according to the agent I spoke to. Frankly, I think this verges on deceptive trade practices.

    I’ve never had a problem downloading updates; I wonder if your subscription type hasn’t updated, or something like that. Can you access the TIS > Diagnostics > Reprogramming > Calibrations > Multimedia Updates page? If so, can you download any of the older updates? If not, before you give up, I’d suggest trying again tomorrow.

    Toyota is a signatory to the AAIA Memorandum of Understanding and Right-to-Repair Agreement, so there aren’t supposed to be any dealer-only calibrations or firmware.

    The agent gave me an email address to escalate this, and the tech mentioned a possible issue caused by the cache. Using a different browser I was able to download the file! Turns out the only issue with Techinfo is that the front line support just needs a little more training. There is indeed no restriction.

    I did get the firmware update installed yesterday. Unfortunately, the system still reboots. As one last effort I will probably try removing power for a full restart of the system.

    I dread taking it to the dealer, as they'll likely want to replace the unit. Can't help but wonder if the replacement units don't share the same problem.
