Brake Booster & Brake Booster Pump Assembly Support

    I recently got a correspondence from Toyota about a Brake Booster & Brake Booster Pump Assembly Customer Support Program. If I read it right they're covering repairs on this problem through the end of 2021 regardless of mileage -or- 10 years/150K miles from date of first use.
    I've attached a 'card' you can remove from the mailing and put with your owners manual.
    Has anyone else gotten this yet?

    When test driving the 2012 Prius V I now own, I noticed the brake booster pump running often. I knew this to be an issue and wanted the Toyota dealer to address it in writing from the service department that it would be fixed. The tech explained that he could do nothing until the system produces a code but he did print a report (specific to my VIN) from TIS that has 3 CSP's referenced on the bottom.

    I wonder if you can have a code and not have a Check Engine Light? When I changed my pump I didn't have any codes and it was running a lot.

    Did you change it yourself or have a toyota dealer do it?

    I have an OBD 2 reader and it is not showing any codes.

    After shut off the pump cycles every 10-12 seconds at least 6 times before it stops even after I lock the doors.

    Otherwise it is running great with no oil usuage in the 1st 500 miles of driving it. The AC kicks butt in humid hot Florida. Not bad for a 8 year old car with 90k on the odometer. I am averaging 41 mpg so far

    Yes.. I changed mine myself..... it was running every few seconds.....still worked ok...

    8 year old car with 90,000 is like new to me....

    As expected all the brake warning lights came on last Sunday. Wesley Chapel Toyota took it in on Monday, confirmed the issue, gave me a rental car and ordered the parts. I picked it up last night. No charge for the warranty work.

    I'm the 4th owner, the car is 8 years old with 91,xxx miles on it and they fixed it for free. Thanks for everyone in the past who exposed the issue to Toyota and for Toyota for backing their product. Thank you for those on this site that aided me in my research to be educated about the problem and how to handle it.

    We've heard similar from Honda too... Is it just me, or is this sort of "fox guarding the henhouse"? It's in the manufacturer's best (financial) interest, to program the car to ONLY display a code if the failing component is near death?

    My local Toyota dealer confirmed my 2013 Prius has a malfunctioning brake booster. The booster continues to actuate and make noise. However my car does not have any Trouble Codes showing up. Therefore, the dealer refused to perform service under the bulletin and estimated $2500 repair.

    Anyone here experienced anything similar? Any suggestion for next steps?

    They want to replace it because it's bad, but it's not "bad enough" to be covered by the CSP? :rolleyes:

    I'd be speaking with the manager, and eventually Toyota if you can't resolve it locally. That seems like really bad customer service. Did you buy the car from this dealer?

    It has to fail totally leaving you manual hydraulic brakes with no power assist or the pump has to run for several minutes. Either will set the code. The dealer is not the issue, it is Toyota corporate who has to pay for the new parts (probably $1000 wholesale), the dealer's reduced labor rate (maybe $300) and perhaps a $50 rental car.

    Once it sets the code, don't clear it.

    Given a box with a dozen valves, half a dozen pressure sensors, various other hydraulic, electronic, and electromechanical parts, when did we decide there's only one way it can go bad?

    When a support program gets initiated, it's usually because they've identified some particular failure mode that is affecting more of the units than the designers anticipated, and they find there's a systematic reason it happens, and they say "ok, we'll replace the parts that go bad in that way."

    They don't create a program just to give free parts to anybody whose part wears out or breaks in any way for any reason.

    There was a time about twenty-seven years ago I was shopping for an office paper shredder. You know, little thing sits in an office, cuts up paper.

    One of the offers I received was for this little beauty:

    Of all the products I looked at, that one clearly took top honors for "designed to last forever". It was offered to me for the price of $2,990 ($5,227 in December 2020 dollars), and it weighed 255 pounds.

    I didn't buy it.

    The competitor that I did buy, at a tenth of the weight and a similar fraction of the price, is the one I'm still using twenty-seven years later. "Good enough" worked out for me on that one.

    I spoke with the manager at the dealer and there was no luck. I haven't contacted Toyota directly.
    The car wasn't bought at this dealer but it has been exclusively services at the dealer in question.

    At this point, the brakes seems to be ok but the actuator continues to make noise all the time. I am afraid the brakes fail at the wrong time, for example while driving. Even while parked, standing car, the actuator continues to make noise.
