Is there a trick to getting the car to drive with the hatch open? I want to buy some 12' boards, but 10' just barely fit. Don't feel like renting a truck just for that. I tried it, and the car just sits there with a pretty picture of the hatch open on the screen. Toyota has gotten more annoying about telling you the hatch is open on succeeding models, but it has always worked on our previous priuses.

That's sad to hear! Just the other day I needed to drive a bit with my hatch open, no problem with my 2013 PIP. The first time I did so I was kind of surprised I was able.

People seem to love the electric smart car for running around town.

I just tried it in my 2017 Prime - worked without issue in both Drive and Reverse.

If there is one thing I have learned about Toyota, the safety stuff always gets worse. In my 2006, I could drive with the hatch open if I lived through a beep that went away. The 2010 would beep obnoxiously the whole way home from the lumberyard. Don't remember if I ever drove the 2014 with the hatch open. The 2020 doesn't move. There must be a way to override this behavior, but maybe it requires messing with the door switch.

eta: I am 93.5% sure I can tell if a car is moving or not.

One time I forgot to buckle up a load of lumber on the front seat, and the car decided it must be a person without their seatbelt on. My ears were literally ringing from the continuous chime by the time I got home. At every red light I put it in park briefly to have a few more seconds of peace without the chime. I couldn't reach the seatbelt buckle while driving because it was under a load of wood.

That's why I had the dealer disable the chime before I took possession of the car.

Got a washing machine in my 2007 Prius. No can do with the Prime :-(

Also tried to get a chest freezer from Best Buy into the trunk - again no can do - floor is considerably higher with the extra battery. However, I was able to strap it the roof between the roof rack bars so that was good.

I brought some 10 foot boards home yesterday. They fit inside with room to spare (I think I estimated the limit in another post). As I was unloading I needed to pull the car away from the garage to make room. I was able to drive forward and backwards with the hatch open. There was no beeping, but I'm sure it would have started beeping if I drove at any measurable speed.

I've hauled a few things in mine. The picture is a 6 foot ladder. It fit with no problems. I also brought home a 6 foot tall, 3 foot wide book case.
On another occasion I did a bit of home remodeling for my mom (500 miles away) so I had to bring:
    1 double hot-dog compressor.
    6 air tools
    4 tool bags
    1 carry on style suitcase
1 compound sliding 12 inch power saw.
    1 small ice chest.

The tonneau cover covered all the stuff in the back. The power saw and compressor were on the folded back seat.

I just had this happen when I had to put groceries on the front passenger seat.

    Gee, thanks Toyota.

    -----

The biggest thing I dislike about my first Toyota is that the car (so the builder and programmers) continually thinks it is smarter than I am on what is going on inside the passenger compartment. Surely my all too often frustrations have to be others' frustrations as well. How did we get to a point where Toyota didn't think about the passengers and owners?

If you will not put the car into reverse, neutral or park, the chime for seatbelt will stop after around 120 sec... Then you can drive entire trip without any chine :)

Ive loaded 54 2x4x8 and could have added 20 more if i needed them. It will also fit 2x4x10's if you put the passenger seat all the way back with the headrest off and the board pushed down to the floor. The hatch will close.

I can get a 10' 4"x4" in my Gen3 with the hatch (and windows!) closed. Can you still do that with the Gen4?

It's dealing with it for the 120 seconds that irks us.

I did have it shut off once ... once.

A ROLA part # 59001 M.O.V.E. Rigid-Base Trunk Organizer. About 7” tall and well within the 10” max height with the cargo cover in use.

Initially wanted the Clevermade brand collapsible organizer to keep groceries in check. But wanted something wide to keep things moving to the back glass (previously used the extending snow brush/ice scraper). My car doesn’t have carpet or all weather mats so this organizer holds well. Also folds flat. Comes with velcro adjustable dividers.

Just do what I do and take a screwdriver and push in the part of the latch until it latches so the car thinks the hatch is closed. Then pull out the screwdriver 90* to how you pushed it in. This also gives you a point you can run rope though to help secure the hatch closed. As long as you dont "pop the trunk" you'll be fine.

I just transported from work two projectors for testing driver updates at my house. Both projectors fit in the trunk side by side with the cargo cover able to go over them.

Hi @m8547 , just checking but you've got your front passenger seat with the headrest off, and just pushed down all the way?

Whenever the 'rona is banished (oh glorious day), this group I volunteer with will probably start having public outreaches again... would be nice to be able to help carry the long folding table! (My previous '03 Prius was a no-go!)
