I use L2 charging in a public parking with a charge point station to charge my 2020 prime LE. In the last few times, for some reasons, I had to stop charging when the car display was still showing "20 min left to full charge" but after unplugging it showed 100% charge with an usual EV range! Why this is happening? If the battery will be full in 2 hr, why we have to keep it connected to the power outlet for an additional 20 min until it shuts off by its own? What is the point for this extra time? I never used 110 outlet at home to compare bacause of my strata restriction. Thanks, Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
Charging rate slows significantly as the battery gets close to full. Your first hour will probably net 60% while the next 30 mins is 30% and the last bit is the last 10%. We believe the last bit is for balancing the cells and honestly there’s probably some rounding too. I.e. you might drop from 100-99% sooner when you unplug at 1h50m vs. 2h10m.
Thanks for your comment. I didn't noticed any change in the speed of battery draining with 2 hr charging. Just thought that it would be better for the traction battery to keep it plugged for only 2hr if there is no difference. Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
No idea. It’s only 10 mins. I’m sure eventually someone will chime in as a few members here have kill-a-watt or similar consumption meters and have graphs to show the charge rate. @john1701a for example. Really even after 1.5 hours, you’ll get most of the charge back, sitting around 80-90% when charged from empty.
That means if I am paying for the L2 charge station for the time, not the actual kWh used, then stopping the charge at ~1.5hr would be the most economical use of the charge station. Not that I have any use for that knowledge for now. LOL
I have a meter on my L2 outlet. But I don't have an easy way to monitor it continuously. What I have seen is that for about the last 10-20 minutes the current and wattage drop way down. I haven't noticed a reduction earlier in the charge cycle. @bwilson4web had a good picture of the charging rate vs time on this thread Odd charging curve | PriusChat but the link to the picture is broken. I found a very low res representation of the graph on Google. It supports my casual observations.
Pretty much, yeah. Same applies to any public charging (L2 or DCFC) where payment is required. Also it helps if other people are waiting to move before you’re fully topped up.
