I don't recommend the aftermarket battery from newpriusbatteries

    So my engine just degraded like a switch? Just poof, sudden poor fuel economy. No misfire. Spark plugs are relatively new. Probably about 20k on them. Basic maintenance throughout my ownership of the car. Fuel trims are normal. Acceleration feels normal. I've had this car for about 5 years. I'm pretty familiar with it. And I like how you put in the "claims to be a Toyota certified tech", like it's some kind of insult. Your battery sucked. It doesn't have the capacity. I have looked at all other factors that could possibly drop MPG like this. It all points to storage capacity of the battery. This battery will use almost half a charge to accelerate up the freeway to speed. Then it just hangs out in the 1-3 bar range on the screen. The engine is running a lot, charging the battery. Even on city streets. I thought I was the only one, then I came across people with similar experiences. I never have time to get on a forum to discuss this. So I'm not really going to be following up with this much more. I just wanted my negative experience with the battery to be searchable, so when other people experience the same thing, they won't think they are the only one's who have had a negative experience with this battery conversion.
    And keep in mind, there was only 1 change that happened, when my MPG suddenly dropped: this battery conversion.

    You mentioned that you have techstream. Would you post a photo or screen capture of the hybrid battery live screen? It would be interesting to see the information displayed. We could definitely fill in some gaps.

    Yes he did buy it directly from us. He has an authentic battery.

    As I told him and everyone here, while it's possible it can be the battery it would be a very small probability. It could be something as simple as not tightening the nuts which limits the current output and increases heat. But that's been checked according to him.

    If there's a battery problem I will gladly swap the packs. But, as I have said, that would mean we had multiple test escapes from multiple pieces of equipment run at separate times. And when I go back and check the calibration on the equipment they measure out well within specifications. Measuring good batteries yields good results. Measuring bad original OE batteries I have sitting on a shelf for years, measure poorly.

    I am completely open for suggestions in helping resolve the issue. I am really sorry he is having a bad experience but I honestly do not think it's battery related. Perhaps the wisdom of the crowd can help debug the issue. I have not seen any actual data from the pack installed or not. And as far as I'm aware, no codes have been thrown. No lights have illuminated. To me, it points to an issue in the drivetrain. Engine to tires. Something doesn't seem right. It's unlikely that the mileage could have been perfect and high before a new battery was purchased unless it was completely preventative maintenance which I do not believe was the case, but I am welcome to being corrected.

    I would be interested if OP has data about max current flow .. State of charge cycing.. Temperature etc

    just drove up a hill in EV mode as a test ... most of the time was well above 20 amps, with a 10 second pulse about 50 amps, and another about 90 amps. (click to see full graph)

    How is the 12v battery?
    Age?
    How long had the car been down and out during the swap?
    Was 12v disconnected during swap?
    Resting voltage of 12v?

    Just wondering if this has been checked off the list with certainty.

    I bought a newpriusbattery.com & have had no problems.
    The engine revs much less on acceleration & up-shifts quickly. The old pack was circling the drain. Down to 37.5 mpg, down shifting & engine revving high on small accelerations. I had reconditioned it in May 2017. And got 43.6mpg city 46.2 highway. Dropping to 41.5mpg city in winter. Haven't had the new pack in long enough for real mileage readings. On what I would call medium acceleration, the HV battery does half the work & the engine doesn't rev anywhere near as high as it used to, up-shifting quickly as speed stabilizes.

    I think Scott either has a loose a bus-bar bolt or other drive-train problems.

    2K1Toaster, did he send you back the modules?

    Reading it again gave me a headache and made me realize again how people can act like d-bags.

    No matter how much you want to help someone, they can't even do something as basic as post a photo to help you help them, but want to keep groaning and complaining how bad everything is.

    Then north acting like a little itch instead of a grown man. Frustrating thread....

    I had a similar experience with one of my rebuilt batteries. The customer swore the battery was bad despite multiple engine codes and that the engine sounded like a bucket of bolts. Just as described here the battery would get run down on hills or high speeds. The drained battery is the effect of a poorly running engine which is the cause of the problems. Again, the drained battery is the effect and not the cause! A charge and discharge test with Hybrid Reporter showed the battery was fine. A year and a half latter I saw that same car again at a towing company I do business with. It had got impounded. I swapped the battery into a another Prius they had. That car was sold to a friend of the towing company and is running great.

    I bought my current work Prius with a bad engine. The car would run smoothly without codes. There was just a slight tick at idle which went away at speed. With a full battery the car would accelerate normally. Highway driving or hills would quickly drain the battery and then the car would lose power. The battery was getting drained because the engine could not produce the power needed. The cause of the poor engine power was a broken piston skirt. I have seen this happen to four Prius. The broken skirt allows the piston to rock a bit and this gets picked up by the knock sensor. Then the VVT retards the timing and reduces the engine power. A simple test to confirm is to drop the oil pan and check for piston chunks.

    It's not always the battery.;)

    BMS in a G2 is pretty good. If any issues whatsoever it will throw a code. If your having driving issues and no codes its mechanical.

    If i was doing this swap i would also pay close attention to the battery ECU circuit board health. Take it out of the metal case look at it with a lighted magnifier for corrosion and corrosion in the plugs which is very very common. So many posts on this site about that ecu.

    Then I would recheck all the nut torque on the battery modules.

    Lastly do a simple mpg base line test. Find a nice straight and flat unbusy road about 4 miles long. Turn on CC and then turn off all accessory's and get the car up to 60 miles an hour. Reset the consumption meter to show 0 mpgs. We want fresh mpg data.

    Make sure the tires are properly filled. Fill all tires with 38 lbs.

    After 4 miles on CC at exactly 60 miles an hour whats the mpg read? My 07 with 155,000 miles gets 50 mpgs. with original prolong assisted battery for this exact test.

    With your new battery you should easily get around 60 mpg's I would think.

    I bought the NPB kit and installed it in a few days. There are a couple of things I didn't like such as the lack of technical drawings, just photos, but the batteries are quite good. My expience and training as an electrical engineer makes me squeamish around photos used in work instructions. However, MPG went from 30 to 45 immediately and that is a good sign. After install, car booted up with no warnings, no error codes, no nothing. Started up right away. My wife was impressed, which is something. The NPB kit is a good deal. BTW, I've worked in the EV industry since the EV1 days and have seen some scary stuff. This battery is not your problem and without a hands on evaluation, I couldn't begin to know what is wrong. The fact that you had an "alignment" done tells me you have limited experience. Good luck

    I purchased this product for my Gen 2, and did not experience this with the replacement harness. If anything, the replacement harness is a tad too long as to require a bit of redirection to accommodate it.

    I've had no issues with 6 months and 9,000 miles of use. Satisfied customer.

    I installed this aftermarket battery in February 2019, put 27,000 miles on it, took it on eight 1000 mile non-stop trips for vacation, and a couple more 700 mile trips. Best mpg on a tank of gas was over 50mpg, worst was 41 when tire pressure got too low. Average mpg is 46 mostly highway miles. I have not had a single issue with my car since replacing battery. I purchased it with a bad battery and even had cells blow up on me. Car was still driveable after i had a cell blow up, and yes it did actually blow up. (btw installed battery at 248,000 miles, currently has 275,000)

    I've installed a GEN3 NewPriusBattery about a month ago and have put about 1000 miles. So far I've been very happy with it, I immediately noticed the difference and was able to get my mpg up from 35 to about 46 MPG. I'm not quite back to my typical range of 54MPG just yet, but much of that may be due to my very different commute in a post covid world. I'm also thinking I have a bit of maintenance to do (clean egr and throttle body, replace PCV and spark plugs, etc...) especially because I drove my Prius for several months with a bad battery, putting extra pressure on the engine.
