Blown Head gasket rebuild....@297k

    So i replaced struts and shocks all around alongwith brakes and when i took tires off, i found the culprit of oil seeping from near oil filter housing. There was a bolt which was about halfway undone, i believe i left it untorqued when i did my headgasket.
    I torqued it now, will see if that solves it.

    That was a good find!
    If the leak doesn't stop, or it slows, you may have to remove it and replace the
    two "O" rings. The oil leaking is under pressure and may have damage one of them.
    But a very inexpensive and easy fix!

    If you remove it, replace the "O" rings. Unless, they are NEW and undamaged.

    I might replace it on next oil change. If i remember correctly i dnt think i need to put gasket seal around this part as part of timing chain cover seal. If not then that will be easy and i might do it quickly on oil change

    I did the oil filter conversion and there was no form in place gasket involved. Just on a phone now, but I do have PDF of the repair manual info, on pc.

    Basically you can remove/replace it without disturbing the timing chain cover.

    So at the risk of sounding dumb. Is there nobody who has outlines the process or head gasket replacement on a gen 3?
    I honestly don't have time to scour 46 pages. And most of the videos I can find are not very good quality.

    Some of the video links no longer work.

    I have pnutbutter oil in my throttle body, only getting like 43mpg, get the engine knock EVERYtime I start the car, and loss of coolant. Running my fingers in the exhaust pipe also gives me black on my finger.
    The oil is clean tho. No classic milkshake look.
    That's the only thing that makes me second guess myself.

    I cleaned the egr pipe it was pretty bad. I haven't tried it again yet and am now at a crossroads with if if should go all In on the head gasket. Again. No good step by step instructions. Might go go and hope for the best.

    If anyone can link me to instructions that would be amazing.

    We've done some 3rd gen engine installs lately. Oil ring packed. Can't clean even w brake cleaner and compressed air. Here's the most recent one

    I have a 2007 Toyota Touring Hatchback Prius 195k miles new hybrid battery on it and just received notice I need whole new engine because my piston skirt broke sending metal into oil pan and well clugged oil.. After 48 hours of meltdown I found this website. I come from a father who I helped overhaul engines and found this lovely website gave me HOPE. I can fix it myself with time not much but with the community forum support I am determined to fix and keep my Prius. Unlike most other folks my car is personal trashing it just not so ease. Wish me luck and all the encouragement I can get from you all

    A brand new short block is an option to consider. About $2k in the States? Plus get the Toyota gasket kit and have a machine shop go over the head.

    I’d guess about $3K all-in if you DIY everything else.

    Or a salvage engine?

    @danlatu did you order the complete gasket set from Beck Arnley? If so, did you have to buy some additional gaskets to complete the job? I am thinking of ordering the complete head gasket kit off Rock Auto, but I fear that it doesn't have all the necessary gaskets.

    2010 Toyota Prius Base Model

    I was able to get a listing of what is in the gasket kit from B.A., and I think are at the least 4 gaskets that are either not included and necessary or maybe they are just not labeled correctly from BA.

    Attached below I will include:
    - an image of the complete gasket kit that comes from BA
    - an image with 2 gaskets circled that I believe may not be labeled correctly in the kit.
    1. I believe the first gasket circled should be an Oil Filter Bracket O-ring. However, there should be 2 of these if that is the correct gasket.
    2. I believe the second gasket circled should be the Timing Chain Cover Oil Seal. However, in the item list from B.A. this should be the Oil Filler Cap Gasket.​
    Since you did the job and used B.A. (Beck Arnley) for your gaskets, could you enlighten me about the 2 gaskets mentioned above?

    Also, here is a list of the 4 gaskets that I believe are missing from the kit:
    1. Timing Cover Bolt Gasket (8)
    2. Camshaft Bearing Cap Gasket - 2 (16)
    3. Cylinder Block Timing Cover Seal O-ring (22)
    4. Timing Chain Cover Oil Seal (28)

    *If you are confused about the names, then I will upload one more file from the Toyota Parts website. I will put the part number in parenthesis, so others that are curious can follow along or provide feedback, as well.

    This is why it's best to go with the Toyota head gaskter or engine gasket kit.
    It will include everything you need.

    The cost of the Toyota kits is 284 vs the cost of the Beck Arnley one at 89. Worst case scenario is I have to buy the other 4 gaskets from Toyota to be safe, then the cost would be around $109. I would much rather spend $109 for quality parts vs $284.

    *My post is, also, to help provide answers to anyone else working through the same job and trying to be cost effective.

    Presumed "quality parts".
    It would be smarter to get the head gasket from Toyotoa, since it's the most important part.
    And get the other gaskets from aftermarket.
    If you must go cheap.

    Anything other than Toyota is a gamble? Not sure if that’s even true, or if Toyota’s just promoting that, but that’s what I’m feeling.

    And the take-away: if you REALLY don’t want to doing it again, stick with Toyota parts. Oh and clean Exhaust Gas Recirculation and Intake Manifold.

    --> Same exact gasket as Cylinder Block Timing Cover O-ring, thus the kit from BA correctly only has the one gasket here. I was able to cross reference the OEM # provided from BA. You would come across the same opportunity if you went to Toyota and asked for gasket kit 04112 which doesn't include several gaskets for the timing, water pump, thermostat, oil pan, and engine crankshaft rear seal. Solution: purchase timing cover gasket kit that includes the other gaskets that you would need
    2. I believe the second gasket circled should be the Timing Chain Cover Oil Seal. However, in the item list from B.A. this should be the Oil Filler Cap Gasket.
    --> the B.A. kit contains the Oil Filler Cap Gasket. The Timing Chain Cover Oil Seal is not provided similar to buying Toyota gasket kit 04112 instead of kit 04111. Solution: purchase timing cover gasket kit that includes the other gaskets that you would need​

    Also, here is a list of the 4 gaskets that I believe are missing from the kit:
    1. Timing Cover Bolt Gasket (8) --> included in B.A. kit already; I didn't recognize it until seeing the part number for the OEM parts provided from B.A.
    2. Camshaft Bearing Cap Gasket - 2 (#16) --> purchase from Toyota

    4. Timing Chain Cover Oil Seal (#28) --> purchase timing cover gasket kit

    Total cost: Beck Arnley gasket kit $89, Mahle timing cover gasket kit $18, Toyota camshaft bearing cap gasket $4, shipping $6

    I have cleaned the EGR system, the intake manifold, and replaced the PCV while I was at it before doing this because I wanted to take a look at everything, since I had the time. I did understand that doing this before doing the head gasket work would require me to touch the same parts a second time, but I won't have to do all that cleaning a second time for those parts. I replaced the intake manifold gasket, replaced the throttle body gasket, and cleaned the throttle body since I was there. Lastly, I won't give a lot of energy to the Toyota parts discussion because Toyota isn't the OEM for all the engine parts, i.e. the water pump, the spark plugs, etc. You can buy the OEM part direct from the supplier or from Rock Auto and avoid the dealership premium. I spent a fair/lot of time comparing parts and tracking back to OEM for the parts that I ended up purchasing. I only plan to do the job once. My parts come in the early part of next week. :)
