"Deliveries of these vehicles amounted to 15,200 in the third quarter of 2020"
That's more than Toyota delivered for the first Mirai's entire life.

Tesla is likely getting ready to start making a redesigned S and X.
Tesla secret project Palladium: new Model S and Model X are coming
"The project involves building new production lines for updated versions of the Model S and Model X."

Mirai is sold in one state. Can’t compare.

    What happen to Hawaii?
The 10k figure you posted was for global Mirai sales.

Hawaii is an island with one hydrogen pump. Can’t expect much in sales there. How many Tesla on the island?

USA sales exceed all other regions. Around 7,500 sales of just the Mirai, not including other FCEVs.

Because California's are so sick and tired of being overtaxed, they may all move to other states and bring their idiotic philosophy with them, that may bring hope to hydrogen cars

Used Mirai's are nearly worthless because there basically isnt any hydrogen filling infrastructure.

I've seen 3 year old ones with under 30,000 miles sell for ~$5,000 (wholesale).

These were cars that sold for over $45,000 after incentives.
Now after 3 years selling (wholesale) for around 90% of their value. Yikes.

Yet they have all been bought and there are deposits down on the new 2021.

When all Gen 1 have been bought and are on the road how did it get outsold. Toyota built what they knew they would be able to sell within one state. With the Gen 2 they have up the sales number to 30k units. This is probably achievable with their new plan and ability to build at a faster pace.

The other side of the story is that pollution from shipping must be addressed. An endorsement for consumer cars, which ultimately proves the technology robust, helps to move along the effort to get the trucks & boats switched from diesel to something green.

High-Volume sales of fuel-cell vehicles for personal use are not required to achieve that. And of course, we see already Toyota working to deliver Class-8 trucks using fuel-cells. Doing that by scaling up technology proven from Mirai is a sensible approach.

Toyota needed to file for safety exceptions in order to sell the gen1 Mirai, and the higher ZEV credits earned by a FCEV meant less were needed to be sold to meet their quota. Then there is the very real possibility that they were selling them below production cost.

That is why they made so few, or they were making to demand, just like Tesla. Either way, far fewer FCEVs ended up on the road in California than BEVs.

The 30k number from Toyota is a global number, and is for all FCEVs they may make, not just the Mirai.

    From the OP's source:
    • Tesla will shut down production lines for its high-end, but older, electric vehicles -- the Model S sedan and Model X SUV -- for18 days beginning on December 24th, according to an email to factory employees seen by CNBC.
    • In the period ending September 30, 2020, Tesla reported that about 11% of its vehicle deliveries were Model S and X cars, and the rest were Model 3 and Model Y.
    • Employees working on the lines were told they were being given a full week of pay for the forced time off, but were encouraged to seek shifts working for, or even volunteering in, other parts of the business for the remaining unpaid days.
Tesla informed employees in its Fremont, California, factory on Friday that its Model S and Model X electric vehicle production lines will close from December 24th to January 11th, according to an email seen by CNBC.

Employees working on those lines were offered a full week of pay to cover one of the two and a half weeks of the shutdown, along with a few paid holidays. They were asked to take 5 unplanned and unpaid days off, but have the option to try to find work in other areas of the factory during those days.

So one paid week off for Christmas, and work opportunities on the Model 3 lines the first 10 days of 2021. That could be both an extra Model 3 shift and trained employees for another Model 3 and/or Model Y line.

I read the Email. Only 3 days, Dec 28,29,30 are unpaid, employees may use PTO to cover those days. Dec 24/25 and Dec 31/Jan 1 are paid holidays. Jan 4-8 paid time off. Back to work Monday Jan 11.

Resale is also low because of fuel tanks with an expiration date, and a fuel cell no longer putting out its rated power.

And the “free” up to $15,000 fuel credit from Toyota is gone after 3 years.

Though they have that to move the certified used Mirai.
