Hello all. Got my first prius, 2010 166k miles, won it on ebay. Already put 4k miles on in the last 2 months. Love my Prius! What got me looking was thst my wife got a lexus ct200h. Didnt want to spend that kind of money for a car to drive to work, so decided on an older prius. It runs great, but I am a tinkerer, so if i can figure out how to post pictures, let me show you.
Egr was a mess....the egr pipe(looks like a box), spent 3 hours trying to clean it, oven cleaner, carb cleaner, seafoam, soak all night, still couldnt see through it. Got tired of messing with it, went and bought one from toyota, ouch...400.00. Crazy. Everything else, going well. Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
Everything went well. Had one issue at initial startup but that was quickly resolved by a search on here. There is that little plug just below the egr pipe that seems to be a temp sensor that I missed to plug in. Seems like a common miss, because found it on here quick enough. After that, she started right up and purred like a kitten. Feels good to have a new headgasket installed. The only issue I am having is a drip from the thermostat housing. It has a new o ring and I cleaned it very well. I removed it and cleaned it again but to no avail. If any of you guys have had this same issue, please comment. My next step is to replace the housing. Look what I found. Barely noticeable, I set my camera on macro zoom to get a better view. Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
$400 for the cooler and valve, new from dealership, is ok. If just the cooler (box shape) it should be around $200~250. I see the "shop towel cam lock" trick. Also nice second ride in the background. Did you determine where the head gasket failed. Very often it's been cylinder 1/2 zone. If you haven't, clean out the intake manifold, in particular the small EGR passages, one per port. And consider Oil Catch Can. You really started with a bang lol. Do please stick around, suspect we'll learn from you.
Yea man, loved the cam lock trick, saw it on youtube somewhere, good eye to catch that. Yes, it was around the 1 and 2 cylinder area. Thats my baby in the background...2004 Wrangler..one of the last inline 6's. I believe 2006 was last year for the 4.0. She sleeps in the garage...lol. Thanks for the heads up on the intake holes, i will check those out. Cleaned everything else, but I will check those again. After working on V8s and the big Jeep 4.0...the prius 1.8 is a dream to tinker with. Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
Few more pics. Wheels without the hubcaps, I like it better and haven't seen any decrease in mpg. The headlight lenses, I took some 3000grit and wet sanded, then used Eastwood 2part clearcoat. The antennae was cracking so a few pieces of black shrink wrap and good to go. Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
Get centre caps. South Carolina maybe not so much of an issue, but up here exposed hubs turn into rust lumps. The official Toyota ones can be pricey; there are aftermarket available. Verify they're 3rd gen style: 4th gen is slightly different, mainly the jaws that push into the bore, lock into a groove. With 4th gen, Toyota shifted the groove location slightly. Also aftermarket quality may vary. I got some, claimed to be genuine but weren't, and slight variations prevented them from seating properly; they rode high and accordingly the jaws wouldn't lock into the groove. 1/2 hour patient Dremelling fixed them. Bottom line too, with the centre caps the rims will look a lot more "finished". I believe this is 3rd gen part no for the cap: 42603-52110 Hmm, price not too bad in the States: Center Cap - Toyota (42603-52110) | Toyota Parts
I have the caps on order, but unsure about the part number. Thank you for that. If they dont fit, now I know what to order. Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
Oil catch can installed. Got it off Amazon. Hoses were of course trash. Went to local auto parts store. Two hoses needed: 11/32 for the pcv walve to the smaller inlet on the occ. Connection is tight, so some pbBlaster on the ends allows it to slip on easier. 5/8 hose for the intake side to the outlet side of the occ. One thing I did was a couple of wraps of aluminun ac duct on the larger outlet side of the occ so the 5/8 hose fits tight. I wanted to make it easy to access so I dremeled a small slot as you can see in the pics that the occ can drop into, works for me. EDIT: I DID NOT REMOVE THE INTAKE. I REMOVED THE RIGHT PART OF THE AIRBOX THAT CONTAINS THE FILTER. THEN REMOVE SOME SORT OF VALVE THAT HAS A HOSE ATTACHED TO THE INTAKE, IT WILL BE IN THE WAY. AT THAT POINT YOU HAVE ACCESS TO BOTH POINTS(PCV AND INTAKE) Drove 300 miles today and as you can see, it works very well. Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
Updates: Installed a strut brace and anti-sway bar. No pic of the anti-sway bar. But the handling went from feeling like I was driving a boat to something that actually feels very stable taking curves. Very pleased with the change in handling. Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
Thermal dynamics entropy macroscopic microscopic matrices I've been interested in the similar properties of microscopic and macroscopic visualizations for a long time. ie: galaxies - atoms 101 The other words above (and especially their multiple definitions) also challenge me to make sense of the world around us. I couldn't help remembering the one Piers Anthony sci fi book I read many years ago called Macroscope. Macroscope (novel) - Wikipedia I sure appreciate the pics of the prius engine internals and the stories that go along with them. Thanks! I've never seen a DOHC or barrels jugs and pistons up close an personal.
I believe I have finished with my upgrades which ended with the upgrade to 17x7.5 with 225/45 R17 I am interested to find out what the mpgs end up being. The wheels came in at 19lbs and the tires were also at 19lbs. Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
