Insurance Costs for Michigan Residents

I used to live in MI and for car insurance purposes I am glad I don't anymore. I did find that Traveler's, with their "Hybrid Traveler's" program, did indeed save me well over 10% versus what I had been paying on my total bill. Probably worth giving them a shot to at least give you a quote. (Here in WI, the total for TWO Prii at $500 deductible on each is $409 per 6 months!)

Congratulations on your forthcoming 2007 Prius! My wife and I love the 2006 Barcelona Red #6 we just took delivery on last month. For the record, we live in Grand Rapids, and I looked into insurance extensively, b/c it basically made the difference on whether or not we could afford the car.

I'd be happy to give you our insurance information. We're paying $523.22 every 6 months through State Farm, or $87.20 every month.

That's for normal no-fault insurance ($100K/$300K/$100K) with $100/ded comprehensive and $250/ded collision. My wife and I are 26 and 25, respectively, and have no citations or accidents (two clean records). We do receive additional discounts (multi-line and multi-vehicle) because our other car and our renter's policy is also through State Farm. From State Farm, at least, the Prius qualifies for a 10% discount because the keyfob is considered an "active" security system.

I didn't shop around for insurance at all because I'm quite happy with our coverage and our agent, but I don't think you're going to be able to do much better than $87/month for a brand new car. We were thrilled when we got this quote, and it's what let us know that the Prius was the right car for us (as if the cars themselves aren't enough).

I pay about $180 a month for my 2006 Prius (Full coverage) 1995 Buick Regal (PLPD) 1993 Buick Century Wagon (Full coverage).
I'm 33 and my wife is 31. I've got 4 points and she has 2 points on driving record.

 

The problem might just be Michigan... then again, i grew up in Columbus, so take what i say with a grain of salt :lol:

That being said, here in MN, i'm paying around $115/month, with 3 tickets on the record (one comes off next month - my agent estimated a 15% reduction in cost for that) and only being 24 (next march i hit the *magic* 25 and get another big reduction). I'm with Cincinnati insurance (Who, BTW, is great - a couple of years ago they replaced my mom's roof with no hassle after a hail storm, and the roof was 20 years old, almost time to be replaced anyways)

Most companies give muti-car discounts when you insure with them, and various other discounts if you have a good agent. You gave the total number - Can you break it down on a per car basis? It's pretty much like comparing apples to oranges with that second car in there. or maybe apples to pears would be better.

But by all means, shop around, get quotes from different places. What might be the best route is to find an independant insurance agent and ask him (or her) what the best you can do is. Often they'll have access to a dozen different insurance companies and they can find the one that has the best deal for you. One of my friends here was with AllState under his parents during college, came out here and went to them for a policy, and they wanted something like 1600 a year from him... he went somewhere else and ended up getting minimum coverage for under 800. So it's definately worth shopping around.

 

I have State Farm and paying $89/month for my 2006 Prius. I have a clean record. This rate includes 10% off my bill because I have their renter's insurance.

 

Our auto insurance is through Horace Mann, and we found the Prius to be less expensive than other new cars of similar value.

Well I'm from Michigan... and have progressive (29 as well not accidents... etc) I pay about 730 for 6mos on my `06. I did find a few companies a little cheaper but I figured I would stick with Progressive... as they where between $20-30 for 6mos. Not "worth" the switch. While the travlers "hybrid" cost about 20-30 more for 6mos.
