Im doing headgasket repair. But I’m confused by this part here. It seems they are telling me too put gasket sealer on my new headgasket?
Yes it does say so. Also note to install within 3 minutes after applying sealer, then wipe off excess after mating the surfaces. Looks like you got 15 minutes to tighten down the preoiled bolts too. moto g(7) power ?
I think they call for the sealant there because it's a meeting of 3 components: the block and the head (with the head gasket sandwiched between), and the timing chain cover. Similarly when the timing chain cover goes on, they call for sealant at all the split lines.
do they want the sealant covering the headgasket? Or just at the lip? it’s a bit difficult to understand.
I was't sure I got it (- the first time looking at the instructions -) either. Read again, the two attachments below. "Apply seal packing to block as shown in illustration. Than repeats "Apply seal packing to cylinder head as shown in Illustration. So just in those spots shown in the illustrations View attachment 201714 View attachment 201715 clearer? I'd recommend you check (if you haven't already) under Installation ( in the attachment below ) #4 especially INFO View attachment 201713 Head gasket replacement ain't no simple thing keeping everything in order
So they just want it at the very edge of that one side? please talk too me like you would a child. Lol
Wow. Got a headache trying to figure it out... So the view in the lower right is from above. The view with two dimensions is from the side. In the lower right pic you would be below looking across the top of the cylinder block. (This is the only way I could make sense of it). The ovoid shaped bead goes on top of the cylinder block not on the front side as the lower right implies. It has a length of 12.5 mm (averaged). It has a height from the top of the cylinder block of 4 mm. It has a width of 6 mm (same view lower right). moto g(7) power ?
BTW- After laying down the gasket you got to do another two beads: 12.5 mm long 4 mm high 2 mm wide (mine has a strange typo 0 - 2 mm radius), maybe do 3 mm diameter to be safe. Then attach the head and tighten down fancy dance... moto g(7) power ?
Was going to ask if I could hire you if I ever needed help with a HG, but looks like you're 119 yrs old? moto g(7) power ?
Provided it runs after I’m done. I can for sure help you. I can see where the old sealant was placed. I know it goes on timing cover. And the mating surface between camshaft sub assembly/ cylinder head. But I see no sealant anywhere on the bottom Half of the cylinder head. Where it mates with headgasket. In the diagram it looks like they place a small bead at the very lip/edge where the timing cover is. But that’s it? I don’t think I should put sealent cover the entire headgasket area or surface. (Update) If you look at this pic I just took. You can see at the one edge. It looks like maybe... there was a small bit of sealent (residue left over). Which would go hand in hand with the service manual. But the gasket residue everywhere else is much much thicker and pronounced. So it leaves me wondering if any sealent goes in that area or not.
If the illustrations don't match what your looking at than you should dig deeper and find some instructions that show the mating surfaces in more detail and are easier to follow. Where'd you get the instructions you posted in your OP? snapon - techinfo - other - Is that simple enough? I'm sure if I were looking at what your looking at I'd be scratching my head too. Pretty much like I am right now.
I apologize if I misrepresented what the manual says. I had to look at my own copy to figure it out. Just those tiny dabs it seems as @vvillovv also notes. It clearly says to repeat before attaching the head. So I would do that also. Possibly the original was squeezed out when the surfaces mated. There is a further step to mold the remainder and remove excess after tightening down. I would not try to imitate what is there it may be the reason you have to do this job in the first place, as in it wasn't done properly last time... moto g(7) power ?
Those indents shown in the illustrations look like gasket seals spaces in both the block and the head. maybe I'm imagining I'm looking at the actual parts and not seeing any indents where the instructions say they should be.
I used to believe it goes around the gasket. Can any human possibly do that within 3 minutes? It all fits together just those tiny dabs in the two corners.... moto g(7) power ?
@jzchen I’m thinking the lil dab of sealent goes right at the lip on each side. Of where the timing cover presses against it. to help ensure no oil can leak into the cylinders. that’s the only thing that could make sense too me. Since it doesn’t show you needing to put sealent all the way around.
sorry my subscript to techstream ran out 2 weeks ago otherwise I'd go take a look. can you post pics of both sides of the gasket? or just put the sealant where you see it on the old gasket. Strange that the old gasket with sealant on it doesn't match the instructions either?
Not really good at this so bear with me. I assume the HG is supposed to take care of sealing given the two surfaces have been made truly flat... moto g(7) power ?
