Tough Choice Between 2 Prii - Info Needed

    My daughter currently has a Gen2 with 260,000 miles. While it is trashed and rusty, it rides very well. She's replaced the batteries and has redone the suspension, brakes, etc.. The mechanics always comment on how good it is mechanically, given it's crappy appearance. However, her mother has offered up her Gen3 with 125,000 miles (due to recent addition of a Gen4 to the fleet).

    My daughter is distraught about having to go through all the upcoming fixes with her mother's car and wonders whether she should just stick with her Gen2. All opinions will be considered, and none of them are binding. We accept the vagaries of fate but also respect the opinions and experience that this board reflects.

    What year is the gen3? 2010 and 2011 can have some issues after 125k. You probably won't get much if you sell the gen2 so might be smart to keep it but who knows it could fail sooner.

    As far as I know the only significant change in all the gen 3 years is revised pistons and rings, which happened sometime through model year 2014. I think. The benefit is possibly less chance of becoming an oil burner.

    There was a revision to the EGR valve, and the intake manifold, maybe for model year 2012. But at least from what I've read it doesn't really help with the EGR/intake clogging and head gasket failures.

    What are the upcoming fixes on the gen3?

    Are there upcoming fixes on the gen2? And which battery was replaced- the hybrid battery?

    What "fixes" are you talking about?j
    Is she getting the car for free? Or very low cost?
    What year is it?
    From what I've read, the only thing other than normal maintainence is the egr circuit.
    Which is not really a hard job to do. Not even super time consuming. The first time it
    will take longer, but after that it goes pretty fast.

    Will she, or you, be doing the work? That will be a HUGE savings.
    If not, then it will cost more.

    But that goes for any car, not just the Pruis.
