Key works opening door and starting car. When a passenger exits the front or rear doors and the door shuts, the dash signals "key not detected" and a warning light comes on for about a minute. Why? Anyone else experience this?

The first thing I would do is replace the battery in the keyfob

Thanks... it's not the hatch. it is the back doors and side passenger door.. and I suspect the driver door would do the same if I got out with the car still running...

its not the doors, they just set it off. sometimes, when the hatch doesn't shut correctly, the warning is set off by the other doors.

    This.

While replacing the FOB battery might be a good idea, I don't think it has anything to do with the RFID function of the "key".

What about the other FOB ? You do have a spare......right ??

You NEED to get this fixed before it fails to start some morning.,

My 2009 Gen II does a similar thing occasionally - after I get in, the key-flashy-light-thingy will be illuminated for a few seconds and then is extinguished. I put it down to the car is just "having a think" - it is getting old, and like me tends to be forgetful as it ages. Don't worry, these things will surely pass - particularly if you read all the advice hereabouts and take no notice of the old curmudgeons such as I. - hope this helps (…actually I don't really care, but nurse says I've to start acting nice to people!) - Wil (BTW, Welcome to PriusChat!)

Thanks... I made sure the rear hatch was shut securly and then tested. While the car is running the driver's door can open and close.. no problem. But when the passenger door or either rear door is opened or closed the warning light, dash notice (key not detected) and beep are triggered. I can make the dash warning go away by hitting the trip button and the warning "ready" light goes off after about one minute of flashing. There is only one beep. Quite annoying - especially when driving rideshare.

Only two previous owners...nothing in the service record.... still consistently does this... will probably break down and take this in as it is quite annoying...especially in the carpool.

Same exact thing happening to my 2010 Prius. Like you said, very annoying when doing rideshare. Did you figure out how to stop?

This might sound stupid, but does your passanger have keyfob also for the car?? I noticed that when me and wifey both have keys with us then sometimes car register my keyfob and other times wifeys.. When wife gets out of the car it alarms the same thing because the key is outside of the car forreal.. ;)

I've found the solution. To solve this problem you have to disconnect the black wire from 12v battery. and leave it for few minutes. After few minutes put the black wire back on. It will reset the computer. The car should working fine now.

It's likely he won't be back until it happens again.

I would also suggest that his 12 V battery is getting weak......but he likely won't see this either.

I've actually found that if my phone and keys are in the same pocket, the phone can interfere with the key fob enough that sometimes the doors won't unlock or I can get a "key not detected" message until I remove the phone from my pocket.

I thought it fixed my problem but it didn't. It was ok for few days but my car started showing this error message again. Really confused.
