One thing that was bugging me was that the hatch cover (tonneau cover whatever that is) had a tendency to flop up and partially block the rear view unless I had it closed (by closed I mean pulled across the trunk). I tried rotating the cover assembly so that the side it retracts into would be out the side instead of the top, but the whole thing is shaped to fit in the right way only. I finally figured out that if you pull the rounded flap down, so it hangs down by its own weight, it won't flop up on its own. Of course you could keep it closed which would also keep it from getting in the way.

By the way, I discovered the trunk floor hold-up rod when I was showing off my new car to some co-workers. We all found something new that day! I just wish the plastic trunk bin had some wire rod reinforcement around the rim because it bends easily if you lift it out with heavy items in it.

P.S. By pulling the down the rounded flap, I mean pulling it out a little then positioning the flap so it points straight down, with the little tabs on the flap resting on the underneath of the retracting mechanism. This seems to work well enough.

Wait, there's a storage space for that cover? I've always thought it was annoying that I had no good place to put that thing when the seats were folded down. What do you mean by "under the floor board in the truck"?   :huh:

 

Lift up the cargo area cover (in the "trunk") which is under the cargo mat. You will probably need to "unlock" it by twisting the two round locking mechanisms that will be close to you. When you lift the cover, you'll see a couple of places on the right and left side of the storage tray that are the same shape/depth as the tonneau cover case. The storage tray is not as wide as the tonneau cover, so you will need to slide the tonneau cover into the left side until the right side will drop in. This is in your owner's manual, so if I have not described it well, the manual will have an illustration.

 

I don't store mine down there (or use it over cargo for that matter) because it just gets in my way. I use my dark tint for privacy back there! My cargo cover sits in the garage wrapped in plastic awaiting resale time.

When in the storage position, it blocks easy access to anything that's in the bin (assuming you have the floor in still... and crap on top of it like it seems I always have!)

 

I should note that everything mentioned in this thread is covered in the Owner's Manual (at least the 2004 version) in the Other Equipment section. Once you are comfortable with the car, it's a good idea to peruse the full manual to discover these things.

Here's a tip that's not there:

If you have trouble closing the hatch without pushing the spoiler at some point, try pushing against the Toyota emblem in the center. The leverage is suprisingly good there, and you don't feel like you might accidentally break something.

 

I guess everyone knows you cargo cover will fit in the "trunk".

Very useful information. Only today I had to carry a load of leaking flower pots containing potted plants. Remembered this post. The plastic well was exactly right for this load. I would not have otherwise thought of it.
