I'm just as excited about this site as I am about my 2006 Prius.
24 months and two dealerships later I took delivery of my '06 on the last day that Toyota Hybrids were eligible for 100% of the federal tax credit. WOW, that was a close one.
It’s great to see so many people as passionate about this car as I am.
My first experience was when I drove a Hertz rental 2.5 years ago, and I continue to rent them each time I travel.
I'm 52 and have owned 27 new cars. The Prius is one of my favorites.
I believe that I've done a better job selling (promoting) this car to friends and associates then Toyota salesmen do. Clearly, I know more about this automobile then any Toyota employee that I've come across.
This site is making me more knowledgeable and has convinced me that I made the right hybrid choice.
I look forward in taking part in discussions and sharing experiences with everyone.

:D :D Welcome to Prius ownership -and- prepare to enjoy driving more.! :D :D

PriusChat is a fabulous resource for helpful information and hints not to be found in your Owner's Manual. Many of your questions are likely addressed in your Owner's Manual. Another great resource is John's Prius webpage (see link below). John has a long Prius history and has written a more practical Manual. Follow the link below, once there click on: "Prius Info - User Guide H"

    Coda -

Congrats! I predict that you might have some similar experiences like mine. I had quite a bit of enthusiasm when we purchased (June '06). I had not done much shopping, so many of the great features really bowled me over. I did pre-read the owners manual, but for instance, I wasn't prepared as to how fabulously the NAV actually works! And this is my first car with HID headlights - -WOW!

Question - - We bought our Prius with the best package available - - #8. Maybe we were misinformed - - Is there really a #9? Or to put it another way, what features did we NOT get?

    Best of luck,

Congratulations on your new Prius! Like you, I'd been interested in a Prius for a long time, but I never drove one until I started shopping in April. My old car was totallled, so I needed a new car quickly. I assumed I wouldn't be able to get a Prius - everyone talked about long waiting lists - but after I test-drove a used one, nothing else would do. I was lucky enough to find three available in my local area with some phoning around, and drove one home within a week.

I took my car back to the dealer for my 5000 mile service Friday, and they gave me a loaner Yaris. That was one of the cars I looked at back in April, but didn't get a chance to test-drive. It's actually quite a nice car, and much better than the other new cars I test-drove when I was shopping, but I suffered severe Prius-withdrawal on my drive to work. It reminded me why I fell in love with the Prius last April, after being intellecually 'hooked' on the Prius for years - the Prius just feels so good!

Now that I'm a proud Prius owner, I CAN'T go back to anything else on the market today. I drove the Yaris back to the dealer that afternoon, grumbling about having to actually take the key out of my pocket to open the doors and start the car, but the final straw was when my cell phone started to ring just as I pulled into the dealer's lot - I couldn't get to my cell phone in time for an important phone call. If I'd been in my Prius, I'd have been able to answer the phone without fumbling around to get the phone out of my purse!

So enjoy that Barcelona Red beauty! And please be forgiving to all the idiots who swarm out of the woodwork to tell you you'll never recover the hybrid premium now that gas prices are going down again - remember they've never driven one!

Congratulations! We bought our 06 Barcelona Red (yes, with Bisque interior, too!) in August. We just got lucky and stumbled on our car unclaimed at the local Toyota dealer, and drove it home that night.
Actually had the choice of a hybrid Camry or the Prius - the Prius won out.
I didn't even drive the Camry.

I hope you enjoy your car as much as we are enjoying ours! We just put Wet Okole seat covers on today - black with red center and red piping.
    Pretty cool. :)

    Hi fphinney,

You are correct, pkg# 8 is the best available in 2006. Back in 2004 when I first placed my order with another dealership, pkg# 9 was the top-end. (They did not offer leather until '06, and I glad they did. It is a beautiful addition to the car and complements the other high end aspects of this great automobile.)

I also have an '06 Lexus and it has the identical NAV system as the Prius. (Same Toyota engineering team.) So I was excited to see the carry-over in technology and style between the two corporate product lines. It also makes it easier when switching between these two incredible automobiles. Though, each day I tend to manage to steal the Prius and leave my wife the Lexus (technically the Prius is hers.)

Keep playing with the NAV. You will discover more useful and neat features each time you use it. I just sat in my driveway for hours going through every menu and option. Though, like yourself, I do read every page of every manual in advance of using the car. Lexus actually gives you an audio CD to play while sitting in the car, that walks you interactively though many of the features. Toyota should do something similar.

The HID lighting is cool. Very bright and the 'bluer' tint tends to represent sunlight; better for color reflection.

I'm just disappointed in two items: 1) No automatic head lamp activation and delay off feature (the manual does indicate that this feature is available. We have the top-of-the-line; where is it? 2) No auto door locks when the car is in drive. I know from reading this site that a 'hack' is available, but I hesitant about modiying the car.

    Enjoy yours, as well!

I'm sure you'll enjoy the new Prius. We've had ours just over a month. The mileage keeps improving. I believe that is in part due to engine break in and in part due to our learning to more effeciently drive it. We are averaging 50+ mpg. There is some satisfaction in knowing you are driving the most fuel efficient car on the road. I don't count the Insight. Too few, too odd, too impractical. This is truly a revolutionary verhicle. Enjoy.

In North America, the auto headlights are available only in Canada.

That's interesting -- I'm glad it DOESN'T have those features! Oh well, to each his own.

    Congratulations and welcome!
