Source: Volkswagen Responds To VDA's Hydrogen/eFuels Plan: It's 'Nonsensical'

VW says the potential for hydrogen/liquid fuels is overstated, which goes against the German Association of the Automotive Industry.

Many companies and automakers banked on hydrogen for a time, though most are now changing their tune. Volkswagen isn't happy with the German Association of the Automotive Industry's (VDA) request for a hydrogen mandate.

From a cooperate investor perspective the profits in making everyone dependent on a fuel that you can potentially be monopolized is better than electric cars where the fuel source is too ubiquitous to monopolize and make obscene profits from... Yet another example of why we need to stop greedy rich LLCs who are constantly trying to take over our governments to rig the system for their own personal gain at everyone else's expense. Had we stopped them in the 1930's when the first production model electric cars and public transit systems were thriving, the whole planet wouldn't be overheating and burning right now.

The point is VW knows monopolizing hydrogen is the wrong way to go, but the corrupt greedy people who are hell bent on monopolizing everything in the world for their benefit are still trying to do it. Besides after the scandal of faking low emissions, VW has focused on electrification of all vehicles and that's their future, which has nothing to do with Hydrogen.

It is (was?) a risk but one abusive poster should not deny us keeping in touch with current affairs. At least VW was open about their policy. In contrast, GM's policy is by silent omission.

Let's not slap our kid's hands before they do anything wrong now, as the priest at my old church once said....

    VDA = SAE ?

Lots of hydrogen info on DOE webpages. May be something to it...

The SAE is an engineering group that sets standards. Among them is the charging protocols for AC and DC EV charging, hydrogen refueling, the procedure for measuring cars interior spaces, the test for determining vehicle tow capacity, etc.

The VDA is a lobbying group like the Alliance of Automobile Manufactures in the US.
Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers | The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers is an association of 12 of the largest car manufacturers, and is the leading advocacy group for the auto industry.

    Big laugh here.
The same vw that said there was nothing wrong with their diesels, the same that retuned software twice with persistent flaws and increased consumption in Europe and sold in South America the wagens that in USA were not allowed to sell.
Also the same vw that within their group developed efuels (Audi), and also the same vw that refused to embrace hybrids and plug-ins, but is doing so in Europe.

In a few years they will be coming back for something else, or not, who knows.

Well the real question Is what was behind VW’s electrification plan, did they willing do this or were they forced into it as a way to settle their billions in fines with the US Government.

VW took a huge black eye from their fraud. So they were, in effect, forced to come out with a ZEV.
I’m guessing VW decided they could get to large scale production of BEVs a whole lot faster than large scale production of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.

Possibly. Or they were just forced to Build EV chargers as someone needs to pay for them, with them paying for the chargers it just made financial sense to go with BEV’s.

VW hasn't put all their focus on BEVs, they are still working on FCEVs for commercial trucks. It looks like mass production for those might happen in 2030.

Audi did a lot of work on eFuels, which start with hydrogen production. Their sticking with hydrogen to some degree isn't surprising in that light, but they seem to be focusing on larger vehicles at this time. We might see a limited production of FCEV SUVs from them in 2022 or 2023.

Audi did have FCEV plans for China, but it looks like those were cancelled when China cut back on the incentives.

VW Group had various plug in plans going on while they were cheating with diesels. Once they got caught, they fast tracked those programs.
Their fines are also paying for hydrogen stations in California. The judgement was against the VW Group, not just the VW brand.

EV chargers can be installed at home in many instances. Also by the members of the EV industry / community that use it. And for much, it's closer to maintenance-free once they're up and running - compared to hydrogen. National Hydrogen? Not so much. The manufacturers aren't stepping up to the plate to do a trillion dollar project like that, but rather wanting a huge chunk to be done by the taxpayers. Way more so then electric car chargers. VW did the logical thing.
(cough cough) in just 10 years.

Europe puts an extreme high tax on gaso and diesel, so that makes many alt fuel options look better, assuming of course the alt fuel options are free from the high taxes on gaso/diesel.

Also in the USA our regs require super-expensive tanks (for CNG/H2) that high vehicle cost tends to beat down the demand. But other places in the world you just stick a cheaper (eg; CNG) steel tank in there.

You can use steel CNG tanks in the US. They are cheaper, but also really heavy. They also might have a shorter useful life. 15 years is plenty for a passenger car, but the weight is a factor. The Civic GX used a Type 3 tank; composite with aluminum liner. It was 150 pounds heavier than the gasoline Civic with same displacement engine, had less than half the trunk space, and only carried 8gge of NG. A type 1 steel tank would have saved money, but added more weight to the small car.

The extra lifespan of composite tanks could mean the difference between having to replace the tanks on a commercial vehicle or not during its life. They also mean not worrying about rusting.

Europe has essentially the same end of life and safety regulations for CNG tanks as the US. Differences in costs could be attributed to litigation, and not regulations.

Because of the pressures used, and chemical properties, I don't think anything but a Type 4 composite tank is practical for hydrogen on a vehicle.

Places that do have cheap CNG conversions might be laxer when it comes to other safety issues.
