I'm not in need of a new 12 volt battery for the Prius, but I have noticed people on PC complaining from time to time of the "outrageous" (or similar adjective) price of an OEM or equivalent replacement.

But I was just thinking that I might need to replace the 6+-year-old Group 35 battery on our Pontiac Vibe and found that a DieHard Platinum AGM battery (with only a 3-year warranty) is $219.99 (plus core charge), so what are people so upset about? (DieHard non-AGM Group 35 is cheaper, but I am not going to get into the argument about why the Prius needs or does not need an AGM battery.)

Costco Interstate lists 2010 Vibe as a 24F at drumroll: $89.99 plus core...

EDIT-. I was in math class a long long time ago and my teacher complained to the class, "My daughter wanted to buy a bikini and it cost more, for less material. I don't get it"! I guess the Prius has the bikini of batteries.

i paid $200. at the dealer. too much for some, no big deal to others.

i suppose when you compare it to their $89. tru start hype, it sounds quite expensive

Just a heads up, but I'd only buy LiFePO4 from eBay if the family would let me. As time goes on and with my experiment still running, (it's been 2 years now for the v), that conviction keeps growing stronger and stronger....

I currently have a 12.8v lifepo4 battery array of 3.2v, mppt controller and a bms hooked up to my solar panel roof powering an audio amp. Lifepo4 is way cool and way hefty in price, good thing I’m still single :p

The best one is when they bring up the high price of a new hv battery replacement and then the amount they paid for the car.

Our Vibe is a 2008 model, so the battery is Group Size 35. The flooded version is $78.99 plus core (at least in this area: I have to put in a ZIP code to get the price), but the AGM version is a special-order item at $154.99 plus core. Both have "36 Month Limited Warranty Replacement."

Out of curiosity, I have checked for Prius-compatible 12V batteries at Costco, and they are not available even as a special-order item -- and I did try more than one ZIP code in various parts of the USA. The regular Interstate Batteries site shows a Prius-compatible AGM battery for $207.95 with the same "36 Month Limited Warranty Replacement." This does not strike me as a good deal compared with an OEM one from the dealer.

How Interstate batteries compare with any other is a separate issue. I did see that at some point they were accused of using misleading language concerning their warranties, but I don't know whether the matter ever went to court or was resolved in any other way.

if you're not in a hurry, and shop around, some auto parts stores have coupons now and then.

some here have paid as low as $150.

I don't need a battery for the Prius. I started this thread because I had seen how much a reputable-brand battery costs for a non-Prius.

But those auto-parts-store batteries do not have as long warranties as the OEM ones.

I was at my local Toyota dealer for something else yesterday and asked, out of curiosity, the price of a 12v battery. They quoted "Two and a quarter, with a 7-year warranty -- full replacement for two years, and pro-rated after that."

Is that battery only or including installation?

I didn't ask. I assumed that the price quoted was just for the battery -- no installation.

Does the 7-year prorated warranty apply to subsequent owners of the car with its original battery?

idk, never checked. i wouldn't be surprised though, it's just a 12v. afaik, even the hybrid battery is covered no matter who the owner is.
