I did not add it to ours. While they're doing some interesting things, I don't believe it something I want to deal with "at this time". Yeah, I've watched nearly every FSD video there is out there. That's what solidified my personal choice.
You'll get standard Autopilot and it is pretty good. In 2019, autopilot paid for itself in accident avoidance so I've never looked back. BUT there is a 'learning curve' as you relearn how to drive a car. Don't rush using Autopilot but enable piece-wise control in light and later, busier traffic. In my case, it took at least three weeks before I could trust it. Yes, there are edge cases but best mapped while relearning to drive. A year and a half later, I use it all the time including the early full self driving aspects. The included Autopilot is really good enough for me. I regret that Tesla's terminology has made understanding where the lines are between "Adaptive Cruise Control", Autopilot and FSD are. When the uninformed hear Autopilot, they immediately think of an airplane where it does everything. For others reading this besides Bob, autopilot is a suite of driver assistance capabilities similar to the Prime. The free standard included Autopilot includes: Automatic Emergency Braking Front and Side Collision Warning Obstacle Aware Acceleration Blind Spot Monitoring Lane Departure Avoidance Emergency Lane Departure Avoidance it also brings: Traffic aware Cruise control Autosteer (within your own lane) Once you understand what Autopilot is, you can much better discuss what FSD brings for $10K extra as of Monday. Fortunately, FSD research has given us some free kick nice person Autopilot tools. The full FSD computer, cameras, and sensors are installed even if you don't purchase FSD. I'll wait 5-8 years on FSD. It is very cool to see in action.
As a ‘heads up,’ TACC still changes the speed, heavy braking, with little to no warning. That will be the one to try for the first weeks. It is from Google map speed errors. You don’t want that TACC to spoil lane keeping. Bob Wilson
Since Tesla offers the program on a lease basis (as well as a buy) it'd be great if they do a month to month. Try it? like it? you keep going. Try it & hate it, then you stop next month & maybe try it after another 7 or 8 rev's .
There is a learning curve and a month won't be long enough. Self-training means the customers will 'snatch the car back' too soon to learn how to trust and use it correctly. Bob Wilson
How many drivers really want auto-pilot. Gee just go ahead and take all the fun out of driving, there is nothing better than when one feels connected to the vehicle one drives. Auto-Pilot MAYBE, when I am 80 years old. No thanks!
