Will the EV-Auto mode drain the battery all the way down if you drive far enough ?

    Jerry answered your question. Yeah, EV/HV switch any time. Some people do not bother and let the EV mode to drain to zero and let the car automatically switch to HV. I have been playing with EV/HV switch a lot to conserve traction battery charge, but it is not always the most economical way to drive. In my case, with EPA rated EV and HV efficiencies, EV cost 30-40% more than pure HV mode. Naturally, I am switching EV/HV to get better EV efficiency to offset the high cost.

    You bet. I’ve been driving for 3+ months. And I have read the manual and reviewed it again. How do I get the most out of my traction battery. (Besides going downhill). Is a specific mode recommended?

    We switch from EV to HV while driving when heading out of our local area on a trip that would be more than our EV range.

    The EV mode only works if you have a charge available left on your battery, the HV is available regardless of charge level.

    We stay in EV constantly when driving locally as it would be rare for us to use up all the EV charge in one day when we stay in town. (we live in a small town)

    We only use HV mode when heading out of town as we know it will be more than the EV range to get to the nearest city and back home.

    I'll second the comment about the driver's manual. It's actually pretty good reading. Highly recommend it. Just read a little at a time.

    Since I was coming up on 4 months of the original tank of gas, I figured it was about time to start using it. So I constantly operated in HV mode. I tried to keep the charge level around 50% to minimize the stress of charging/discharging. Mileage was pretty good considering, though I really only have small commutes, so it's probably lower than what many of you would get.
    Finally I planned on a longer trip, so I filled it half-way. THEN we cancelled our trip :(. But at least I have some newer gas in there (but still with ethanol). So I'm back to my EV mode for now and charging every few days (I really try not to hit the extremes of the charge percentages...considering how little I use each day, it isn't a big deal). It will probably be 3 months before I have to worry about emptying that tank again!

    I'll probably hit HV on the highway, though, for efficiency sakes. And that will help with burning a little gas too.

    for traditional Prius, how much drive/regen braking must be done to charge the battery ? Will 50 miles (80 km) drive can make it fully charged ?
