How many prime owners have invested in a L2 Charging station at home?

    This is a REALLY BAD IDEA.

    There is a temperature sensor that's wired into the Toyota EVSE 5-15P plug, if this plug is cut off the Toyota EVSE unit won't be able to determine if there's too much heat at the plug connection.

    Don't cut the Toyota EVSE plug off !!!

    Yes, I believe in SAFETY...

    Cutting the plug off of the Toyota EVSE means removing one of Toyota's safety systems.

    Rob, good to know, but...I really don't like the idea of 240 volts in a connector that looks (is) a 120 volt device. If I had it, I'd wrap the plug & connector in red tape so it couldn't come apart and looked unusual. Somebody sometime will be in that garage and need to plug in a compressor or shop vac or Skil saw and....

    You keep the adapter connected to the plug on the EVSE and then plug it into a 240V receptacle. When you unplug, you unplug it all, leaving a 240V receptacle ready for whatever 240V plug you want to plug in.

    I haven't bothered. On the rare occasions when I use a lot of charge, go home for less than five hours, and then go out and need to drive a lot more, I just burn some gas. I'd have to do that an awful lot in order for an L2 charger to be worthwhile.

    I do have a nice mounting bracket (built for a garden hose) to coil the charger on in the garage near where I park, so I feel like I have a nice at-home charging station even though I just use the stock charger.

    Circumstances have changed for me and I'm finding more and more need to charge fast. Plus, the method of charging I'm using right now isn't all that safe (I have a semi-permanently installed extension cord) and it uses the only circuit I have in the garage.

    I'm now planning to add a subpanel in the garage so that I can charge, vacuum the car, run the air compressor, run the pressure washer, and so forth all at the same time, and I'm going to install a NEMA 14-50 for charging the car as well as its own 120V circuit. This way, I can buy an L2 charger if I want to and charge at maximum rate and not have to worry about popping breakers or shutting off everything else.

    Don't use the pressure washer to wash the car while it is being charged. ;)

    Joking aside, I know what you mean by changing needs. I am planing to do similar thing as you. In my case, my need for L2 EVSE have not changed much or it has even diminished now that I am not driving much. I know I will never recoup the cost of L2 EVSE installation. But, I am planing to install PV panels on the garage roof. Now, for the inverter hook-up I have to install a sub panel in the garage anyway. Since the line running to the garage from the main panel in the house has to be upgraded, it is matter of installing an extra breaker and 240v outlet to bring in larger EVSE dedicated 50A circuit into the garage. I don't really need faster charging, but I really would like to have WiFi connected EVSE to monitor the charge profile and energy use. I recently purchased a new generation JuiceBox 40amp ESVE from EnelX. It was on sale with incentives. I am not sure how much it will cost to install it, but it should be part of much bigger bill for the 10kW PV installation.

    Having owned a Prius PiP and a Volt, I found the best way to take advantage of the EV part was to have a level 2 charger. I've owned it over 8 years now, so it more than paid for itself.

    Lee Jay, for very little extra cost at this time you can have your electrician run the 240 volt cable into a blank box. That way you're almost ready to go when you get the Level 2 EVSE.
