I have been in 2 hit and runs. 1 I had to chase down, due to lack of camera and the 2nd one was with the dash cam so there was no need to chase down. Both were in California. I had to request the sheriff that I would like to press charges for felony hit and run. The County Prosecutor took the case because it was a 100% prosecution rate with the evidence. They were fined an undisclosed amount of money and possible jail time.
Something drastic happened because the driver's lawyer called my personal number to try to settle out of court, but I told them to go pound sand. Life got in the way and I never followed up with the County Prosecutor.
The 30 year old driver of the Ram truck did not have insurance. But, the truck was insured under his Mom. The Mom's insurance took care of the damages.

My beloved company only issued Hybrids for a short period of time, and I need to change my call sign from "Goofy" to "Uncas"...for..."The Last of the Noble Oppressed Collective of Indigenous People."
They now issue either repurposed imported "Hello Kitty" micro-vans or base model domestic HD 4x4s.

Our techs have been plastering mailboxes, fire-hydrants, parked cars, etc with the Hello Kitty vans, since you cannot see out of them and the use of mirrors is about as well understood by the modern driver as passing lanes are.....so we're buying (or leasing) more of the 4x4s lately.

The mileage sucks but you can see what's behind you.

Yeah..I'm aware of traffic laws...I was responding to a certain stretch of road in my area that I have been commuting on for 20+ years...

Full disclosure...the vast majority of truck drivers on this particular stretch of road are great. However, nearly every single time I have observed this tailgating behavior it has been one of these jacked up trucks driven by a 'young male'...it is hard not to stereotype. Chalk it up to youth I guess?

 

Last time I tried that, the truck (it's almost always a truck*) moved right at about the same time as me. He thought I was trying to cut him off or something, so he went around and brake checked me. Thankfully, I was anticipating it, he didn't brake check very hard, and the semi truck behind me didn't run into me. The idiot could have gotten us both killed if the semi truck driver wasn't paying attention.

* The one exception is the other day, some guy in a small old-ish economy car was irrationally angry that I was going precisely the speed limit. To express his discontent, he pulled up fast behind me and followed within a couple feet of my car, repeated that a couple times, flipped me off, and swerved around me as I made a turn into my neighborhood. I don't understand what I did to offend him. Driving the speed limit (or lower!) is pretty common around here. This was on a road with a 40mph limit outside my neighborhood, and he must have been behind me for a half mile at most. There's also a middle turn lane ("suicide lane") most of the way with nowhere to actually turn, so he could have passed me if he really wanted to.

Just today I was being a garbage truck doing 33 mph on the same stretch of road. Who cares, it took me 10 seconds longer to get home. This guy would have had a heart attack or something.

 

It's not that you were doing the speed limit, it's that you were in a Prius doing the speed limit, so he knew that you were smug.

 

I need to get one of these stickers.

Then, what does your state do about people driving without licenses?

I hope it is more than my state/county, which just writes up another piece of paper that gets thrown into the giant warehouse of unenforced fines and unserved arrest warrants. Which the county once tried to monetize by offering an amnesty to those who wanted to clear their conscience by expunging their failure-to-appear warrants and settle fines without having to pay late fees and additional penalties. Because, well, the county wasn't ever going to get around to doing anything else with that massive storehouse of paper.

20% of drivers on the road without valid licenses? Meh, they have other issues to deal with.

I disagree with those who would suggest that there was no need to chase the pickup truck down. You don't know until after you review the footage if your camera has picked up enough license plate / other info needed to ID the driver, . The more footage you can get, the better.

I guess you (maybe it's just your state) don't have uninsured motorist insurance coverage ?
If I get into it with an uninsured driver, my insurance will completely cover me, and then go after the uninsured motorist in court, no hassles on me. Granted, I have a camera going at all times too, so I'd be glad to submit that video, if it would help the case.

 

Well, the way it was explained to me, was that they would attempt to bring them to court if necessary, and recover the $...... But in reality, I could totally see it going the way you explained it. Granted, if the accident was not my fault, my deductible would still only be $100.

 

I'm glad that you were not physically hurt. Pls keep us updated and let's hope that he learns the easy way- through his wallet. If he doesn't, and he's consistent, he'll learn the hard way.

btw, the 300Ztt was my favorite compared to all the other generations before and after. Those were some good days, eh?
