Panic alarm keeps going off randomly

Alarm goes off randomly when fob is bad. It took me a long time to find out after going to 3 dealerships. Replace w/ new fob will solve the problem.

 

I just bought a 2007 Gen 2 Prius on Saturday and had a new battery pack put in (not 12v) on Tuesday. A few times since, the alarm has gone off by itself.

I’m not all that interested in replacing the 12v which seems to be working fine or replacing door/hood sensors. I don’t need an alarm on an 11 year old car.

Does anyone know how to disconnect or disable the alarm completely? I checked with the local Toyota dealer and they said it would be $100 to hook it up to their scanner and disable. Is there not a wire I can cut that would disable it completely?

 

P.S.- I have an OBD2 scanner myself if there is an option in there.

 

you could try barista or torque, but i'm not sure if they can do it. tech stream is what the dealers use.

 

I’m at a tire shop getting tires put now and the alarm went off twice in 5 min. The first time the key fob was in my pocket. The 2nd time the key fob was in the cup holder in the car just sitting in the parking lot. Both times nobody was in or near the car and no loud noises. I pulled the horn fuse for now.

Every post I see talks about fixing the “problem” with the factory alarm. 12v battery health, door/hood/trunk latch sensors, and even taking your sunglasses out of the holder. I just want the alarm system disabled completely.

The problems I see with “fixing” the system are: 1) I don’t want to pay $100 to the dealer PLUS if I disconnect/replace the 12v some time in the future, who’s to say the alarm system won’t revert back to factory default setting? 2) Tracking down and replacing non-working door/latch sensors is time consuming and costly. And who’s to say one won’t fail again in the future? 3) Replacing the 12v battery is costly and may not fix the problem.

Murphy’s law says if I replace the battery, 2 months down the road a sensor will fail and I’m right back to the problem. Going the “fix” it route means you have to replace the 12v and ALL the sensors to guarantee the problem is fixed. As a gift to my future self or any future owner I want to terminate the entire alarm system. As Ripley said, “nuke the entire site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure”.

Those batteries may or may not be that reliable, but who knows.

Do you have Amazon Prime?
Can you afford $3.40?

If so, this will most likely be a superior alternative to the CR2032 battery from the Dollar Store. You'll have 3 other batterys left (assuming you have the 2nd remote).

 

"Seems to be working fine" is NOT a good test.
Testing is free most places. If you have a voltmeter you can test it yourself.

It would be .....unwise.....to ASSume that it is good because if it is not other things will start failing too.

The "logic" you are trying to apply to this problem is faulty, on several levels.

Sam Spade, you ASSume I am not interested in a healthy 12v. You are incorrect. I am currently (pun intended) working an a new mobility replacement. But I did not post about replacing my 12v battery. I did not post about FIXING anything. I posted about disconnecting the factory alarm. I thought I was very clear on this by pointing out that I DON’T want info on separate issues like battery fixes or door/hood/hatch sensor fixes. There are PLENTY of posts dealing with those on many previous malfunctioning alarm posts. I am trying to find out how to disable or disconnect the alarm. If you or anyone else know how to do this, please post the procedure. If you want to talk about batteries or sensors please go to another thread.

 

Update on alarm issue. The randomly activating alarm finally drained my 12v battery (I had horn fuse pulled but the lights would still flash). Yesterday (3/28/18), I had a brand new Toyota 12v battery installed at the local Toyota dealership. The alarm continues to go off randomly.

This highlights my concerns about “fixing” the alarm. Now I have a brand new battery that, over time, is in jeopardy of an early demise.

Disconnecting the hood sensor and shorting the sensor’s two wires did not fix the issue. The dealer says they can’t turn off the alarm via their fancy scan tool. The local car stereo shop says they can’t disconnect or disarm it.

Does anyone have an idea on how to fix this common issue? Does anyone know of a website, mechanic, or dealer that knows how to fix this? I live about an hour NW of Charlotte but am willing to go anywhere within 300 miles to get this fixed.

 

i don't know if this will help, but the panic button on my fob was somehow jammed and it would trigger the alarm intermittently. I had to pry the little red button out of my fob and that took care of it. other than that, check a wiring diagram to see if there is a separate alarm module. you my be able to unplug that module if it doesn't perform any other important functions.

I just went outside in the dark/with flash light and 10mm wrench/disconnected the dang negative side.
Thanks/I may get a battery/I'll test the volts in the morn.

Key fob blinks when its low voltage.?
